Post by: Valkyrie on March 01, 2009, 11:00:02 AM
Ok so my computer apprently is a piece of junk. . i play World of Warcraft and only have this programme on while i am playing nothing in the background.. i can barely do anything in the main cities and i normally get lag spikes when caster as i am a mage. .

My comptuer spec is. .

512 MB DDR2 RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Intel Celeron 420 processor. .

Now my question is. . if i upgraded my RAM to a 2gb would i have no lag problems? as i am a raider ofc. . and well want this sorted cause it's annoy

Thanks!!

Welcome to the forums.

I'm now a WoW gamer, but from what I understand the hardware requirements can be quite steep to get acceptable performance in more populated areas.
Your computer is fairly low-end for gaming, especially the graphics chip.
Is this a laptop or a desktop system?

Well, in that case you can easily do some upgrades, if you like.
Is this machine pre-built?  (e.g. Dell, HP etc)  if so, what's the model?
If it's custom built, what are the other specs?  If you don't know, click here (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,61970.0.html).
What's your budget?

I'll put together some info for you now.

I don't mean to double post but if you didn't read my edited post i did this for safer measure, and i hope it doesn't affect anyone?

Anyway. .

I've also been talking to my friend about this problem and he has told me to go to here and this link  http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158995
and told me to get this graphics card and then get a cheap RAM 2gb for around £30]

should this be enough for it too run smooth

OK, here's what I think looks good to me.
2GB of RAM - £22.99. (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-084-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=144)
Radeon 4830 graphics card - £86.24 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-187-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938)
New 580W power supply - £57.49 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-009-HP&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=)
New processor - £39.09 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-194-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=554)
Comes out to a tad over £200, but you perhaps could drop the graphics down to save a little, or buy your CPU from somewhere else like CEX (if you have one nearby, those CPUs go for around £25, which is a steal).

Hope this helps.

I see your post, and that graphics card isn't bad for the price, but the 4830 is much more pwoerful and better bang for your buck.  If you wanted to save some cash the 4670 is what I would recommend though.

Just to say though...

I have a machine here that isn't listed in my specs,
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8GHz)
1GB DDR RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro

and this runs WoW WoTLK at lowest apart from spell detail at full, at 1280x1024 at 60+ FPS
so at medium settings at 1024x768 I still get 60+ FPS.

So really the only thing you seem to be needing is a graphics card, rather than an integrated chip.

Also the Celeron series never really was that great at games.

Kurtis - thanks for stepping in, it's helpful to have some comment from someone else who's played/plays WoW.
A graphics card will require a new power supply anyway, or at least I'd highly recommend one.
The Core-based Celerons are pretty decent actually for the price, I've built a few systems round them and found them excellent, the only disadvantage being that the 4 series are only single core (hence the newer E1200 and upwards series).

It is ok :)

Yes that card will want a newer power supply if it is under 500W for optimal use.

I admit, I have not had much experience with the newer celerons, only the older ones, up to skt 478, but only the ones before celeron D, which only had 128KB of l2 cache.

In comparison, my old 2.5Ghz celeron is far outstripped by the 2200+ @ 1.8 GHz, even in games, using the exact same graphics card (Radeon 9700 Pro)

That being said, your celeron 420 is of a totally different series and timeframe, so is alot more efficient at it's tasks.

I also noticed you were running Windows Vista too, this can degrade performance with poorly written drivers, and also with memory usage/page file, as you only have 512MB Ram.

Both the graphics cards you and Calum have posted are overkill for getting 60FPS in game, i would expect over 100+ with either card & 2GB of ram, with the main bottleneck being the CPU.
