Title: Unable to view files and folders on my C:/ Drive
Post by: Aquao on March 25, 2009, 11:41:44 PM
Hello. My system has been very slow lately and I wanted to move some files from my C: and D: drives to my external drive to free up some space. The problem I am facing is I am unable to see the files and folders that used to be on my C: Drive. When I click on C: Drive, a message pops up stating that C: is not formatted. I know formatting C: drive will wipe out all my files so I am hoping someone out there has another solution. Also, when I right-click C: Drive, click Properties and check the Capacity, it is showing 0 Bytes. There should be about 12 GB. Also in Properties, when I click on Tools and try to check the volume, nothing happens, when I try to Defrag, a message states that it cannot run this type of volume and when I try to click C: from the command line, the following message 'The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted' appears. I have ran out of options. Please help. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Run diagnostics on C

If you want to save the data use a utility like
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
or
http://www.recuva.com/
to try to get to your files.

D is your boot drive right?

Are you running XP?

Do you only get the error when you try to move the files to the external hard drive?

Response to JJ 3000: Yes, my Operating System is Windows XP and I am unable to see anything on the C: Drive all the time.

Response to KingPincer: Yes, I am able to view everything on D: Drive.

I have another issue. While trying to make room on my D: Drive, I compressed the drive and now my system is even slower. Is there any way I can decompress D: Drive so that it goes back to how it was?

Right Click on your C: drive then choose properties uncheck 'compress drive to save disk space'
