Samba De Amigo – This is a great Sega game that you have for dreamcast. I have a dreamcast sitting in a shelf LOL  :D

If you really want to get retro, get yourself a famicom (nes) if you can still find it

I've got a Sega Gamegear and a possibly broken Atari 520STe (more a computer than console but hey).
I used to have a Gameboy Colour and Sega Megadrive, but I sokld them both a few months before they were considered "retro".
Some of my old favourite games are Super Mario Bros, Altered Beast, Ranger X, obviously Sonic (1, 2 and 3), Streets of rage 1, 2 and 3.

do you think it would be worth the time to grab the retro games on the wii's retro console gaming place? Like you can get gamecube game to play on wii without having to now physically get the gamecube disc in?

I still have a working NES, with super mario bros. 1, 2 and 3. Used to play duck hunt on it, but the gun doesn't work anymore.
Also have an old SEGA mega drive (16 bit) with Pac-mania, Sonic the hedgehog and some tetris-like game.

Title: Re: Old game consoles?

Sega Mega-drive? I thought, the one before genesis, was "master system", and it competed directly with the NES?

Or did they have two 16-bit consoles?

Oh, and you all know what else is a great game, or more precisely, a great series, Smash brothers. heh, I had the N64 version for ages on my console and now on my emulator, but I've only seen Melee and now Brawl. Thankfully I decided to buy a GC  just for Melee, managed to get an emu running of it and I have to say it will be a nice diversion.

famicom? I got one of those. It's the non-American NES!!! And it's still very fun to play and it's still good.

SNES(both my actual console and ZSNES emulator),

Homebrewing SNES is fun, but very hard(takes like 30 lines of ASM to just change the background color  :P)

But back on subject..

I wish my dad was into console homebrewing. He's a pretty good ASM coder, uses at work a lot so he tells me as well as C++. That's the life of a computer engineer I suppose.

I managed to find a C compiler made specifically for the SNES(well actually the SNES's CPU), but it had a very limited library and it only came with one Word doc as "Help" and was pretty hard for simple tasks(perhaps I'm not C literate)

I have a NES and a PS1, with Mario World, P.O.W., Duck Hunt and some alien game for NES and a Final Fantasy anthology for the PS1 (includes Chrono Trigger, FF IV and V I think and another FF related game).

My favorite 'retro' game, and really my favorite ever game, would have to be Final Fantasy VI (Final Fantasy III in the US). In fact, most of Square Soft's games for SNES were really good. Some other retro games I like... hmm... Super Mario World and the old NES Metal Gear games and Bionic Commando.

I wouldn't consider anything on CD to be really 'retro', unless maybe it was on that horrible SegaCD thing they came out with. Anything Playstation, Saturn, Dreamcast, XBox, etc. is way too young to be anywhere near being called 'retro'.

how is final fantasy compared with metal gear solid? Wondered what you think, both are decent  ;D
Title: Re: Old game consoles?
Post by: quaxo on May 23, 2009, 10:28:48 PM
Hard to compare the two... two different styles of games. The franchises on the other hand, MGS has done much better than FF in terms of enjoyment in each subsequent sequel (for me anyway). MGS keeps getting better with each sequel whereas Final Fantasy seems to have gone downhill since VIII, each sequel moving further and further away from what the series once was. VI was the peak of the series for me, I was really disappointed with VII, VIII put my faith back in the series, but IX, X, X-2... I just couldn't enjoy them like I did the others, and they kept getting worse and worse.

Back on the topic of Retro games, I still love Zelda: A Link to the Past. I actually pull it out once in a while and give it a play though.
Title: Re: Old game consoles?

Zelda's nice. It's still doing pretty decent.
Title: Re: Old game consoles?
Post by: BC_Programmer on May 24, 2009, 08:53:13 AM
I haven't played any zelda game that came after Majora's Mask. I have beaten all of them up to there. Since I have a GC now I might get a copy of wind waker, but I'm not sure.

I'd say my favorite in the series would have to be a toss up between "A link to the past" and "Adventure of Link".

Also, if the PS1 doesn't count as "retro" would the N64 also not be considered as such? (I have to agree if that's the case, actually).

I'd say the SNES/genesis era probably defines the current line for "retro" games.

As far as FF games, I've never really been fond of them, but I have to say that Chrono trigger is one of the greatest SNES games. I've heard people say it's the "best game ever"- I don't go THAT far.

Apparently they renamed the Japanese version of it in several ways due to copyright infringement:

EG: Aquaman from the Japanese version was renamed to Waterman(Aquaman from DC comics)
Title: Re: Old game consoles?
Post by: BC_Programmer on May 25, 2009, 10:50:43 AM
you mean, the japanese version used different names. It's aquaman here.

he's such a pushover. Actually, all of them are on megaman 2. I just beat megaman and do the rest in pretty much any order- just making sure I have flash before I fight quickman and I usually beat heatman before I fight woodman.

megaman 3, is a bit more annoying. I used to start with snakeman, but I now start with magnet man. He's far easier.

MM4 has a well-defined cycle. I start with toad man because he's so easy. let's see here, then it's bright man, then... well,  I forget the others. ot surprising- 46 robot masters can be tricky to keep sorted.

Actually, Mega Man isn't even Mega Man in Japan. His original name, and the name he's known by in Asia, is Rock Man. His Japanese creator chose this name because of his personal love of rock music (so I've read). Rock Man's sister robot is named 'Roll' (making Rock & Roll). She made an appearance at the end of the first Rock (Mega) Man game, but her name isn't mentioned until Mega Man 3.

Rainbow Man was a name they had considered, since he changes colors when he changes weapons.

That is true, in the comic series(Japanese version and a special chapter in one of the English volumes) you actually are told from the creator that some of the characters have a musically derived name, eg:

Rockman & Roll (Rock and Roll)
Blues(Protoman in the Japanese version, Blues)
Gospel(The Grave Virus from the comic, Gospel Music)

And also Bass(or Forte from the original Japanese, Bass I guess means the Bass & Treble of music)

Bass's robot dog is named Treble.

I can't remember Rush's Japanese name but I guarantee it's  Musically derived as well.

I have an old original Game Boy (the old fat, white one). Still works. Two vertical lines on the left of the screen occasionally go out for a few minutes, but other than that, it still works fine. Oh, and sometimes the cartridge has to be reinserted a few times before it works. Think the contacts are a bit worn out.

Think my favorite game on there would have to be Final Fantasy Legend.

Not only do I have a Christmas Limited Edition GameBoy Advance, I also have a Christmas Limited Edition Original DS.

The DS feels much better than a DSLite. And the DS's GBA slot is deep enough that the GBA game fits...and neither DS or DSLite can handle GameBoy Colour games...

By first edition, I mean, literally, first edition of the first model.

See even the first model design had two editions. after the first year, they made them with cheap plastic that yellows in time. Mine has not yellowed at all, so it must be an early manufactured version.

Oh so you actually had the first editon of that model. I just have the first model(Don't know the edition, gotta check the serial #)

But heck, DK Country and Super Mario World.

Zelda games for SNES were ok, its just that they could of gotten a bit better graphics.
Or did the Zelda games come out before the Super FX chip was developed for Doom and Star Fox?

TLoZ:LTTP came out in '92. (it was the only zelda game for SNES that I'm aware of)

the SFX chip was around 95/96.

Even so it would have been a waste of time to make a zelda game using the SFX chip. it actually kind of sucked in Doom and Starfox. Only great use found was with the SFX2 chip in Yoshi's Island. Instead of trying to make some goofy 3-d game they actually decided to improve upon their current sidescrolling tech. foregrounds, backgrounds, all scrolling and animated.

Anyway for an update after my recent set of acquisitions via ebay my (better) SNES games consist of:

Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Donkey Kong Country 3
Killer Instinct
F-Zero
Super Mario Kart

and probably some I missed. but it's growing.

As for gamecube right now I have smash brother's melee. But I'm taking up your advice macDad with Starfox adventures next time ;)

It's kind of funny how the games have changed. Look at a NES game cartridge, then look at a PS3 disk... :)

and then look at the gameplay and realize that in many respects we've regressed, in a lot of games. The same GOD *censored* STORY told OVER AND OVER by these bloody resident evil games and first person shooters get's old very quickly. Not that nintendo themselves didn't take to long to get that message either. I mean, SMB1, SMB2J, SMB3, SMW, mario 64... jesus, how many games did they make where the end result was saving the bloody princess. It's simply an overused cliche. I suppose it works, but I mean, realistically, bowser would give the heck up and do something more productive, or mario would simply say "screw it, I'm going back to bed".

BC,

In my opinion SF Adventures is waste of money(all you do is punch dinos  :P) all the other SF games are great.

And thats what I kinda thought about the SFX. N64 and GC are still the best consoles for Zelda(Most notably Twilight Princess  8))

Well the main reason why they stuck with it was because people have always, and will always like Mario. (not 100%, but that's the reason).

oh wait, my bad, you said, SF assault.... I guess I'll get that instead then.

SSBM is a great game. took me almost a week to get all the characters/stages. Just gotta finish all-star mode now with all the characters...

that's true. come to think of it, I didn't really give a *censored* about the story. In fact. having a story that isn't so engaging can be a relief sometimes, doesn't make you think too much.

how do you "accidentally" do that?

I used to do that with my n64 SSB every once in a while. 3 single player games later and a break the targets stage later and I have them all back again.  :)

oh and I didn't see it as badgering. It's a good thing you mentioned it, actually, otherwise I would have gotten adventures.

So, my next ebay spree will probably land me Wind Waker,Assault, metroid prime, and.. I think theres a mario kart on GC too, but I forget it's name. whatever it was I'm getting it too :)

although I don't think I'd call the GC an "old" game console. IMO even n64 is pushing the definition of "old" !

Mulreay, He created HTTP, for transfer of files over the World Wide Web(The Internet is a platform for the WWW)

ARPANET is the actual original internet even though its not running anymore.

The Protocals including the current(TCP/IP Protocal) were developed by ARPANET, NPL, and a few other networks.

The WWW uses these core protocals and of course HTTP for transfer and transmit/recieve of info(This is what then created HTML, the main transfer language of the WWW)

I collect old consoles and pocket games( more like tabletop games ). I like to find the older 70s  to mid 1980s  systems, games, and accessories at yard sales to avoid the prices of say EBAY. The days of finding them in a yard sale are RARE these days.

My personal favorites are the VFD display Coleco Mini Arcades, which are worth good $$$ if good operating condition and battery panel is still there, and you dont open it to find 25 year old batteries in it that have exploded long ago eating the contacts.

Last one I picked up Donkey Kong I paid $5 for at yard sale 3 years ago and when opening battery panel there was VERY OLD "Toys R US" Brand Batteries in it that had Jeffrey the giraff on them and they didnt leak. I was amazed that such cheap batteries lasted 25 years without leaking.

Console Systems:

- Atari 2600, and 7800 ( never bothered with getting the 5200 because it was a failure ) and have about 300 games
- Intellevision ( 2 games Frogger & Pacman)
- Colecovision ( 4 games )
- Sega Master System ( 5 games )
- Sega Genesis ( 30 games )
- NES ( 50 games )
- SNES ( 20 games )

Handheld/Table Tops:

- Original Gameboy ( 2 games - Mario & Tetris )
- Coleco VFD Mini arcade tabletops { Pacman, Donkey kong, Ms Pac Man, Galaxian }
and runs on C batteries.
- Generic VFD 2-player arcade tabletops { Pac-Man 2, Galaxian 2 } runs on C batteries.
- Generic LED w/overlay arcade handheld { Space invaders } runs on 6 AA batteries 3 on each side.
- Home RUN 2 person tabletop with red LEDs that pattern in and out as ball ( 1980 ) runs on a 9V and like 4 or 6 AA batteries.
- Football LED with magnified bubble lenses that ran on 9V where you move your - 'dash' around other dashes to run across the field with football to score and intercept the other player.
- 1984/1985 LCD Pocket games {Donkey Kong, Mario Bros} with button cell batteries licensed through Nintendo.
- Radio Shack LCD Pocket Arcades ( late 80's early 90s ) Tandy etc Poker, Blackjack, Slots, Mars Invasion, Space Invaders generic might be called Alien Attack.

Here's one for you. On the NES there was a game where you could play 1-2 player. You played two soldiers (platform) who ran along left to right shooting 'badies' as you went along. You could get a rocket launcher at one point as well. I remember one of the bosses was a huge missile that you had to destroy. Anyone remember the name of it? It's been bugging me all day. Use to love 'Blades of Steel' and 'sensible soccer' as well same system.

Sorry BC never had that one either. It was two 'Marine' style guys running along and I remember that there were red girders that you could run along on an upper level. They were two guy's dressed in grey I think?? I think the huge rocket... yes it was the final level boss. You had to destroy the rocket. My brother and I played it to death. It was about 20 years ago though. I need to remember if I want to sleep tonight.  ???

"Russian Attack" Maybe for that 2 player NES game with the nukes that he was asking about a few posts back.

There was also Operation Wolf, but it sounds more like "Russian Attack"

Contra was like Russian Attack too...but Contra 1,2 and 3 were very odd bosses that puked magots etc, and that heart at the end you had to destroy and what about 30 lives UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A START ... wow its been almost 15 years since I fired up Contra and that 30 lives cheat is still in my head...lol

I used to play those games so much I would go to sleep and still be playing them in my sleep. "Probably the reason why many NES games had the Seizure Warnings"

I like what happened when you entered that code at the ESPN website. Too bad they've already fixed it... it was a little prank by one of their web designers. Think he has since been fired. The code was entered with the arrow keys, a & b, and enter (as start).

heh
Got all three of them in Gold/Silver.

Also discovered an interesting flaw that I took advantage of- I can rename the SAV file from the Silver version to the gold version and vice versa, and load up Gold with my Silver save file or the other way around- I can swap back and forth, and catch more pokemon.

The only questionable thing would be .... do you have the legal purchased copy of the software. Else nobody would know or care, nor do anybody need to know unless it's apparent.

But why be a win XP pirate when you already have a legal version of XP?
