For the month of June we thought it would be interesting to see what the first version of Microsoft Windows you used was. Feel free to talk about your experiences with Windows, what you liked / didn't like about it and/or what you missed about it when upgrading to a later version of Windows.

All past monthly polls and results can also be found on the Computer Hope poll page (http://www.computerhope.com/polls.htm).

Windows ME, first computer that my family owned.

It was Ok at first, but heck all that I did on it was Hot Wheels, and now its complete garbage.

First used Windows 95 when I was about 5-6 years old. First family computer.

Nothing but Red Alert 2. ;D

Windows 95, in 1996, when I was 5.
Used that until 1999, when we got a new PC with Windows 98SE.
I started to become dangerous then, removing files at random and uninstalling things.
2005 or so, we got a new machine with a pirated copy of XP (the builder really stung us on that) which is when I started becoming more interested in computers.
Interestingly, I went from XP to XP, then XP X64, Server 03, Vista, then Windows 2000, 98SE, and on back to NT4.  Haven't found a version I really dislike, as I've still not trialed Vista properly and have never used ME.

Don't remember exactly when, but a good few years ago, the first family PC was running Windows 98.

When I started with computers, desktop systems didn't have built-in hard drives.  Good ol' MS-DOS.  I think Win 3.1 was the first I ever used.  Win95 was the first I owned.  I stayed with DOS on my own computers until Win95 came out.

The first machine I was allowed to use was running Windows 95, and originally used for taxes. Once it became too old to run some software, it was replaced.

I figured out how to overclock it by moving a jumper on the motherboard. (There were only two clock speeds.) I felt really smart.

windows 3.1, on my ancient 286. It was in 2003, I had been running DOS 3.22 for quite some time after finally figuring out that I had to swap the 3 1/2" drive and 5 1/4" drive in order to boot from the 5 1/4" using some old boot disks that my step dad had with his XT. I remember I had to basically steal the disks and copy them because I apparently wasn't going to be able to "fix" the 286.

I had to work with it without a hard drive for a month or so, until I opened it up and discovered it had a hard drive. I had no clue what to do to get it working, but I was able to access the BIOS, and realized I needed the geometry.

I got the values from CH after a google search for the model number. But not after trying my luck with guessing  ::) I entered geometry that made the drive into a larger, 50MB drive. The directory was intact, but appeared corrupted (my guess, in hindsight, being because the files were added using the drives proper geometry and I was accessing it with the wrong settings). So I formatted it... which took nearly 2 days. The entire time was FORMAT saying "recovering Lost allocation Unit ##" for quite a number of units.

The format succeeded and I was able to run MS-DOS for a month or so... then files started to degrade thanks to the wrong geometry. I got the proper geometry (finally) from CH, and was able to get MS-DOS 6, and I even installed Windows, which looked less then spectacular with a Monochrome screen.

Thanks Aegis I was feeling like an old man here until I came to your post.  Glad someone else remembers those days too. The first desktop I used was a Zenith in the late '80s, I don't remember it using MS-DOS, it was probably something provided by Zenith.

The first system on which I ever worked was a Radio Shack Model II, with TRS-DOS.  (Tandy's version of DOS.)  One built-in eight inch floppy drive (single sided), and an exta cabinet to hold up to three extra floppy drives.  With two drive bays, you could run the operating system, and not have to remove the OS disk to run programs.    ;D

The first windows product I ever used, I bought and still have the disks Windows 3.11.
Back then, I thought the hard drive was huge, it had a capacity of 780 meg and I'd never fill it. :o

Now people wouldn't blink at a drive of 1 or 2 terabytes. 8)

Bought a Gateway first. With windows 95. Then upgraded to 98. Five years later and not knowing how to get help, a lot of surfing gone by and the computer being pretty much locked up, Gateway said they were not going to support my computer any longer.
I bought a dell. Now 4 years later and very careful surfing  the dell is pretty much locked up. Frustrated, to say the least, I found Computer Hope yesterday. I have a forum going and high hopes of this turning out to be a successfull, knowledge gathering experience. And maybe acquiring a new group of helpful friends.

1x CD drive

I'm not sure if I still have one of those.  I wonder if a modern system would detect it.  The kind I have is where you put the disk in a "holder" which looks almost like a jewel case, and then load the "holder" into the CD-ROM.   :o

Mine actually looked just like most drives do now, with a mechanical sliding tray, but used an ISA card instead of connecting to an IDE cable.

It came with some Windows 'look-alike' GUI, forgot what it was called.

I'd get caught up enough with the repairs some day's to play around on one of his computers. I don't know what operating system it was but it was fun!  :) I bought my first PC in 2000. Windows ME. It was fun too!  ;D

I first used an old Apple PC running a kind of Apple DOS. That was like 98-99 when i was 6 or 7 years old.

In 2000 my parents bought a computer preloaded with ME. I only used it once or twice or maybe even never so that doesn't count. My parents got rid of it after a few months because it always crashed. ME was horrible, by far the worst windows ever.

So we then switched to 98SE which was really good and stable. I miss 98, I miss my "95, 98 & Me Only" games that i used to run.  :(

After a while when XP came out we dual-booted 98SE & XP and then eventually got rid of 98SE completely. A year or two ago i got my own PC & it runs Windows 2000.

While doing my electrical degree in 1977, I studied and programmed in 'ALGOL', 'FORTRAN' and 'C' while at uni. It only stood to reason that when computers were making their way into homes, I picked up very quickly on the 8086 MS-DOS. The progression eventually lead me to BASIC (a God-send at the time) - remember the C64?
So, when Windows 3.0 was released, this was everything I ever wanted - someone else was doing all the hard work. Having said that, old programmers (like me) had trouble letting go of their roots. After all the time and study to make a computer do something, here was an OS that did it all for you... and in living color!
These days, I'm using a computer to make life easier hence, an XP user that doesn't have to concern himself with assemblers, interpreters, debugging...
I do however still keep my hand in with the nuts-and-bolts programming languages which forms the foundation of everything the modern user experiences today.

Lots of folks are fans of command prompt or CLI (Command Line Interface).  It's the reason I stayed with regular DOS on my home computer until I finally gave in to Windows 95.  I felt like I had more control, and as I half-jokingly told people, if something goes wrong with the computer, I pretty much know it was my fault.

Windows does offer some plausible deniability, though...   ;)

In 1996 we were using in our office Win95. we used that for years but things changed and all of the jargons the people are talking is about computer world with windows 2000 etc. until we tried windows XP but the computer didn't hold enough memory for that O/s so we changed to more higher in specs. Now we stuck with windows XP SP2 because when we tried to reformat to Vista, seemed problems will come. So we're back to XP2. Haven't used Linux or any other O/S to compare with this Microsoft Windows.

I got a great price on them, they were about $ 300 less.  I sold all 31 in about two weeks.  By the end of the month they were all going back to AST.  They were the first and only ones that I'd seen fail, well, except for old age.

Windows 3.X..running on an old AST Advantage machine, 486DX w/ turbo button..woo.  I remember using AmiPro (before Word), and paint was my only source of entertainment.  You had to tweak your config.sys file for memory adjustments.  Ever put an autoexec.bat command in the autoexec.bat file, then startup...lol.  Good times.

Actually they did help for a lot of older games when you needed to slow the system down so they didn't go what seemed like a million miles an hour.

Programmers would also use them to see how they would run on a slower computer.  If I remember right it either disabled the math co-processor or the cache.

my first compute i ever used was win.2000. I was in kindergarden and they got there first computers in that school. when i first started using it i thought i would mess everything up. then i started to like it as the mounths went by. then i met this friend that had windows 95. it was a little bit different but i loved it. i started becoming really interested in computers so i asked my dad to buy me one for christmas. but he said no because computers were alot more money back then than what they are now. but then in 2003 i got a playstation 2 with grand theft auto vice city. that was the best thing i ever had back then so i kinda forgot about the computer stuff and moved onto that but then i started liking the computers more again when i my step mom got one of the first windows vista computers in late 2006 in like november. anyway the computer was very slow and dident work well for somereason so she gave it to me! this computer was like no other computer i have ever been on. it had lots of this allready on it. the hard drive was 350 gigabytes and i dident really know what that was at the time but i knew it was alot of space. so even know the computer was really slow i learned lots of stuff off it! then my step mom took it back in mid mid 2007. thats when my dad went out and bought 2 laptops for 200 dollors at walmart. that is the laptop i am using till this day but the computer is kinda slow but it still is faster than the first computer i ever owned which was one of the first windows vista computers.this lap top i have only has 515 megabytes of ram and an intel celeron m processer 440. but i learned most of the skills and the little bit of html code and how computers work off of my laptop that i own now...

for pete's sake...

and what if somebody first used windows 3.11 and not 3.1?

It's not exactly a formal poll.

In either case, you could probably count the people who used windows 1 and 2 first on one hand.
Title: Re: June monthly poll

Most of the polls on here are poorly constructed.
Title: Re: June monthly poll
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on July 27, 2009, 05:44:06 PM
I try my best to create the polls and welcome any suggestions. Some problems with some of the polls are though that there can be an endless possibilities, however I'll admit that's not the case about Windows 2.x, that's just something for some reason I forgot. I have added it though for those who wish to change it.

Another problem is with the forums poll system, if I add a new topic it goes to the end, which is why Windows 2.x is at the end. :(

Quote
and what if somebody first used windows 3.11 and not 3.1?

That's why it's 3.x the x could represent 3.1 or 3.11. :) However, I really probably should have done 3.1 and 3.11. I didn't think there was going to be that many 3.1 users, but in all reality there probably was.

Really do try my best guys and if at any time you have problems with a poll created feel free to make suggestions and I'll do my best to correct them. You're also all welcome to suggest your own polls as some have already done.

Thanks.

heh, actually, when I said that about 3.1 and 3.11, I was trying to drive home the point that cityscape was being overly pedantic.

in a similar vein it would be silly to say, have an entry for every service pack; since for the most part a service pack just changes the minor version number, so to then does it seem odd to differentiate the different versions of 3.x; otherwise we'd have to have entries for Windows 3.0, windows 3.1, windows 3.11, windows for workgroups 3.1 , windows for workgroups 3.11, and let's not forget those people that used windows 3.0 with the Multimedia add-on pack.

But you didn't do that because your not doing it as a scientific formal type of survey; just a conversation starter  :)

Let me clarify and apologize, Nathan.  I can tell you your name and your polls never came to mind as I typed that statement.  No poll is perfect, I suppose, but you always offer a good deal of content in your monthly polls.  Most of the polls created by others are poorly constructed, with too few choices, or choices which reflect the interests, preferences, or ignorance of the creators.

to which, in the poll thread, I would reply "you better get to the hospital. you might be having a heart attack."

and then somebody mentions how their grandfather had a heart attack the year before and passed away, another poster expresses condolences, another poster flogs the poll creator on the basis that the selections aren't varied enough; there should be a separate entry for each arm, a fifth poster flames them for being so insensitive to the first replier, whose grandfather died. another poster randomly mentions possums, a sixth member decries the presence of conversation regarding possums, a seventh one simply posts "??? No time to talk of  this now I have things to do and such" a eighth post flames this poster for their lack of grammar skills, another poster jumps on that bandwagon and does the same, another poster comments "not this again" the same poster before that mentioned possums speaks of cheese drinks, another poster derates them for mentioning the beverage, another poster continues to mock the one who said they had things to do, and finally a moderator steps in and says they've seen enough and locks the topic.

So you see, this is generally how about 50% of threads in off-topic have been progressing.
