what kind of internet do you have for your laptop? Maybe you can connect the desktop to whatever internet connection that is powering your laptop?

Also, see link here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166#3

The updates need to be saved as a file for this to work properly...
They can't simply be copied...but yes it will work this way

I have a wifi connection. I am currently disabled back problems and I'm borrowing someones connection when they aren't using it, until I get things straightened out bill wise. I am using 32-bit Vista on both my laptop and desktop. I am trying to set up my network but I want to make sure my desktop protected . How would I go about saving the Updates as a file would it be individually or can it be done as one big thing? ???

http://www.blogsdna.com/1522/instantly-download-windows-updates-with-windows-update-downloader-420.htm

Check out this windows update installer, according to above website,
Quote
Features of Windows Update Downloader
1. Lets you select and Instantly Update your computer

2. You can slipstream updates with Windows installation

3. Save Updates offline to install updates on network computers

4. Even collect windows updates to store them for archival purposes.

According to feature # 3, if desktop can be wired to the laptop via some networking, then you can get the windows updates on the other computer that is offline.

I wonder what kind of internet rascal08096  laptop is connecting to (wireless internet like wifi perhaps)?

hey rascal.  another thing you might be able to try, with alot more ease... you can download the service packs for your operating system directly, which include the updates till the release.  This might be your best option because if you may accidently try to install updates specifically for you laptop on your desk machine which would likely result in error.  The vista sp2 standalone download can be downloaded here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en for example.  I understand your concern with wanting to keep your machines up-to-date!

I'll try that. Thanks for the warning to I wouldn't want to mess up my desktop. I have 32-bit on it to and other than more GB on the desktop everything else is the same oh and no burner. I love your picture. I loved Star Trek Next Generation and all the rest. I really appreciate all the help you guys and gals have given me so far. I just want to make sure I keep my computers safe after the investment I've made in buying both of them. It took me a while to save up to get them. Thanks again. I wish I was as smart as all of you with this computer stuff. Thank goodness you are here for people like me.

sure keeping pc up to date is good, Besides M$ is giving out patches to make system more stable. however, the most concern on those patches are the things that can be happening when your pc is online, like hacking and such. Which you probably don't need to worry so much about on your desktop because it's offline and doesn't seem like you will be going online anytime soon on the desktop pc.

You may have to search MS to find older update files if you need them. Some are listed here also. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=42
