Work units have different score values depending partly on how long they take to complete.

There seem to be other things that affect the score though, because I have had some fast units with high scores and some slow units with low scores.

Headed to #3

Post by: Calum on June 29, 2009, 05:37:03 AM
slidewayz has slid on into the #3 team spot, overtaking boo.  Congrats.
Looks like unloved is now within a few weeks days of overtaking Carbon too.
I made a determined run for first place but was held off easily, had to scale back a little because of the heat here lately.

Edit: either I can't read or something was weird ... anyway, unloved is within days, not weeks, of overtaking Carbon.

I've lost 3 of my folding computers, all for unusual reasons. :'(

People with faster machines, or people that leave their machines on longer, will do more work.  That's just how it goes.

is your setting by the clock ?/500 or ?/1500

is your pc never turned of

my folding is running at 95% , so why so slow
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: Calum on June 29, 2009, 01:24:26 PM
My PC is on for quite a while, it's also significantly faster than yours.  I'm not just saying "mine's better than yours", I'm just explaining why my machine folds faster.
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: harry 48 on June 29, 2009, 01:27:47 PM
right , so the bigger the ram the faster , is that right
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: Calum on June 29, 2009, 01:29:20 PM
No, for F@H it's the CPU that matters, as long as the RAM is adequate it doesn't have to be huge.  I'm also running the GPU client (runs on my graphics card) for which only the GPU matters.

this is what i got when i did a search for cpu , is the cpu the amount of memory

No, your CPU may be labelled processor in whatever you're using to get that info... yours is, according to the specs you've filled out, a Celeron 2.4GHz.
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on June 29, 2009, 01:41:17 PM
The graphics card you listed wouldn't be capable the CPU client and running a Celeron processor is a good reason why you'll not be gaining in the ranks as fast as some of the other users.

so what do i need to make my pc faster a larger graphics card

That would certainly give you better performance in a game.  The question is do you want a faster computer, or do you just want to fold faster?
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: harry 48 on June 29, 2009, 03:48:27 PM
my pc is 5 years of age it would open in about 30 secs to the screen from start after all the windows

checks , i have never been on a quick pc i suppose its fast enough for me as i don't do a lot , i suppose fold

faster
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: Quantos on June 29, 2009, 03:51:06 PM
If it's that old then it probably doesn't support a video card capable of running the GPU.

ok i'll just let it plod along in its own time then , thanks for your help , harry

unlovedwarrior , i consider that a waste of energy and your money , things are bad enough and getting worse by the day , but that will likely make no difference

theres not much i can do to make it go quicker

Maybe not my place to respond as I'm obviously not unlovedwarrior, but personally I can't think of a better cause than Folding@Home.  I can't value the energy and monetary costs above the possibility of finding a cure.
We all have different priorities for different reasons, I personally do what I can, no more and no less.

There are a lot of inactive folders down at that end of the team.  Movement is quick up to a point, but the top ranks can be difficult to reach.  Hopefully, we'll see you there ;)

I'm really not too worried about the top ranks, this is more about the project than my own stats, but that certainly explains the jump.
Title: Re: top ten folders

Good philosophy to have, and one that I usually keep myself.
The competition introduced by the points does tend to heat things up a little though, some friendly competition doesn't hurt if it increases the production.

On another note, I've had to stop folding on both of my own systems.  The heatwave here makes my room just about unbearable (it must be the only room in the world that doesn't get a breeze with the window open wide) so I'm trying to eliminate all the heat I can.  That means I'm easy game for anyone willing and able to take the #2 team spot in my absence.

calum , i agree its a good cause finding cures my daughter needed one and did not get it , but us old people

on a pension must take care and look after our money , or i'll not be able to pay for the power i'm using to

keep my pc working

That's completely understandable, everyone has a different income or other factors affecting how much they can contribute.  I'm able to afford to keep my machines running, but don't have the space to expand yet.  I'm also struggling with the heat which is why I can't fold now.
Giving what you can, when you can, is what it's all about, and whatever you do helps.

no problem
Title: Re: top ten folders
Post by: Calum on July 04, 2009, 12:52:06 PM
Well, the heat's magically disappeared, so I started folding again.
I hoped to light up my afterburners and be off, but my units seem to have dropped down the drain, no credits have shown up whatsoever and I've completed at least 3 units.  other credits have gone on as usual (i.e. I've seen other team members' points and units be awarded) but not mine.
Will wait and see, if nothing's happening by tomorrow I may have to head over to the support forums and ask.  On the other hand, the units that haven't been credited may be awarded in the next big recredit (we had one a week or so ago, you can see the huge spike on the stats ... all previously missing WUs were credited at once).

I'd just like to welcome Ugarte to the top 3 folders on the team.
It won't be too long until he's placed first if neither me or admin picks up the pace, or another challenger doesn't appear.
I was hoping to welcome Aegis to the top 10 too, but that looks like it'll have to wait a few days at the current rate.
Nice work.

Hehe, thank you thank you, not bad for one computer to my name chugging along  ;D  I don't have any heart warming stories about why I fold, it's just something I heard about back when the program was launched and thought "What a great idea", but I was unable to participate at the time due to a rather old computer.  When they announced it would work for PS3, I thought "Oh yeah, always wanted to try that..." but my computer still wasn't up to snuff, and I was not enough of a console gamer to warrant the purchase of a PS3.

In July, I went to ComputerHope for some advice on purchasing a new computer.  If I hadn't seen the F@H section of the forums, I would have completely forgotten about this project, so glad you folks were there to remind me.  I'm used to leaving my computer on overnight, whether it be to download torrents or defrag / virus scan.  This at least makes that time and energy spent a little more productive.

Signed,
Ugarte - Folding since 08/02/09, lots of down time to make up for  ;)

Welcome to the top 10, Aegis!
Looks like you may be going further too, might make the top 5 eventually if no one else picks up the slack in between.
