The decision to make someone a moderator is taken by the board Administrator.
In addition to BC's comment, usually moderators would be chosen based on their maturity, ability to handle conflict, etc ... you'd need to stick around and prove yourself.

It's a bit odd to me when a new member would want to be a moderator, but I guess it's common.  It definitely won't be happening anytime soon, and it's not anything personal against you because, well, I know nothing about you...but people are generally around quite awhile before they're considered.  I won't give away all of the details, but the selection process can be rather picky/specific at times.  And although you didn't like the first couple of answers, it's true that those who are overly eager usually don't become moderators.  This doesn't mean you don't have a chance, of course.  Like Calum said, you need to be a contributing member for a significant amount of time and you need to prove your ability, maturity, and responsibility to both the administrator and the other moderators.  Another thing to keep in mind is that new moderators aren't brought on board very often.  The best thing you can do is not worry about it.  It could happen someday, but your main goal should be to help people.

To be perfectly honest, moderating this place isn't a fun job.  Ha.

Whether or not you get what you seek, I'm sure you'll enjoy your time here.  And you never know what may happen months down the road.

Squall i'll explain it this way...
Carbon was the most recent Moderator appointed....
Therefore it's been the same since then.
The size has not changed.

perhaps we need to quote Patio's explanation a few more times...  ::)

It's been the same since Carbon was appointed.

It's been the same since Carbon was appointed.

It's been the same since Carbon was appointed.

And it couldn't have remained the same since Calum was appointed. Otherwise Carbon wouldn't be on the list!

Quote
Name: Calum
Start Date: October 06, 2006

Quote
Name: Carbon
Start Date: February 07, 2007

Look CAREFULLY at the dates. Calum started first. Now, logic dictates, that if it was the case that Patio "meant" calum (which he didn't, chances are if he did, he would have SAID calum, too which I would be explaining this to him, albiet with less drawn out logic), that Carbon would not be present on the list. However, Observation concludes that indeed, Carbon is on the list, his join date is AFTER Calum, and thusly it must have been changed since Calum started.

Now, we just wait and see what convoluted logic is used to counter this.

Either that, or we can count the number of "rollseyes" emoticons. Any bets?

I ment why you should have been a mod, I gave it consideration but rather like my position which means that I meet nessary terms but rather not.

You have a really bad habit of not saying what you mean.  Do you really think that if you say "Then?" that somebody is actually going to know what you mean?  There isn't even a sentence there.  You really need to think before you post.  You must think we're all telepathic!

I've got a very, very important question that I want you to answer:
So?
Title: Re: Joining the CH team
Post by: squall_01 on June 11, 2009, 04:41:59 PM
I'm just saing that if I wanted to spend as much time as I used to on here I could have made a mod.  Not that I really wanted to be at all.
Title: Re: Joining the CH team
Post by: BC_Programmer on June 11, 2009, 04:43:28 PM
I'm pretty sure, there are more factors then "time spent on forum" used to decide who is moderator material.
Title: Re: Joining the CH team

I'm just saing that if I wanted to spend as much time as I used to on here I could have made a mod.  Not that I really wanted to be at all.
One very important skill is the ability to write clear and easy-to-understand messages.  I'm not trying to be mean or insulting here, but you know that many people have a very hard time trying to understand your posts.  And believe me, it definitely does matter.  Several people have been turned down based solely on their poor communication skills because a big part of moderatorship is explaining rules and such to members.

There's a lot more to it than just that, of course, but now isn't the time to get into all of that.
Title: Re: Joining the CH team
Post by: squall_01 on June 12, 2009, 11:00:40 AM
Thats what I'm saing basic's but it means more time still then I can give an everything.

Just thought I'd chime in on this there are several factors to becoming a mod, however all of those factors are superseded by the needs to have additional moderators on the forum. At this time the moderators got things well under control and there is also a list of frequent and participating members interested in becoming mods when spots become available.

Time spent on the forum is not even something I really consider when looking at a user interested in becoming a mod, since I realize everyone has lives outside the forum and I of all people know you can't be here all the time.

Some of the top things I look at:

- Quality (not quantity) of posts
- How knowledgeable the user appears to be based off his / her posts.
- How well user gets along with all users on the forum
- In some situations the times that they're on the forums. This helps make sure at least one moderator is on.

Of course before anyone is accepted I always bring the final decision to all current moderators and get their final say in the matter.

So can there only be a certain number of moderators?
What do you mean "when spots become available"?
Can you explain?

Again, not me to do so, but usually it goes by member to staff ratio. So, more members = more moderators needed.

There isn't really a set number or anything.  Like kpac said, it's essentially a matter of ratio.  And part of it is simply based on the admin's whim.  If he decides that someone should be a moderator, then the subject is brought up.  If there are enough moderators to go around, then he generally doesn't see a need for adding to the team.  If we lose a moderator, that doesn't necessarily mean that someone else needs to be brought on.  However, if losing a moderator results in things becoming a bit hectic, then that would be when a "spot becomes available".  I hope this has cleared things up for you a bit.  Sometimes, things can sound more complicated when I try to explain them...I blame my wife; I get it from her.

Look I'll be fair I'm giving up smoking starting today so you need to appreciate I'm not a happy bunny.
You have serious issues when it comes to sentence structure, spelling and grammar. Your messages are at best that of a child. You also don't seem to know when to give up. I sent you lot's of PM's asking to be your friend and to help you/help me. You ignore everything everyone tells you and continue to post ridiculous comments irrelevant to the original thread. You mentioned that you would not want to be a Mod? Is that a joke? You a Mod? I would rather eat my own face than have you in direct control of me. I get that you have issues with.... everything but it's the sorry way you keep arguing with everyone. You stated that Computer Hope was going down! So be it but if it does It's because of people like you.
I'm drawing a line now Squall and I swear to Computer Hope I will stop all these stupid messed up threads with you at the centre for ever.
I tried to be your friend and you dismissed me. So end of.
