Thank you for taking the time to review my post. I am new to this forum and have so far found it quite informative.
My current problem is I have a laptop with Windows XP. I have tried several times to restore it to an earlier date only to get a message
Your computer cannot be restored to
Date Requested
No changes have been made to your computer
To choose another restore point, restart System Restore
To say the least I've tried other dates and have failed with the same message appearing.
My system has a Total Size: 37.2 GB with 26.2 GB FREE
The disk space to use: Is set at the max 12% (4577 MB)
There should be more than enough space available I would think to do a System Restore
Thank you for your attention and assistance

Hi ADug welcome to Computer Hope. Can you supply the rest of your system details please. As much as you can mate.
-
Have you tried to do system restore in sage mode? If not try it, it will usually work.
Good Luck
-
Safe Mode, that'd be ;D
-
I have attempted in safe mode and failed there. I will try again though.
In regards to my system :
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Mprocessor 1.60GHz
-
Whoops! Sorry, thanks for the correction Mr. Broni.
-
;D

Repair:
Click Start, Search and look for SR.INF. It should be in "C:\WINDOWS\inf"
RightClick on it, then LeftClick it, select "Install"
Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore will be ready to use.
>
Another possibility is that the System Restore folder is damaged.
Disable system restore, delete the System Restore folder, reboot,
then re-enable System Restore. The folder will be re-created
automatically.

If he does this he loses all restore points...i don't think this should be suggested yet at this point in time...

True Patio. Sorry. I put the little > point to say a lesser point but I guess only I got that.
-
Absolutely.
If anything, if System Restore doesn't work from Safe Mode either, he can try to repair it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairsr.htm
-
My comment was concerning patio's reply.
-
I've attempted to restore in Safe Mode and have failed Miserably again. I've also done the search for SR.INF. and come up empty handed on that front as well.
:(

I will definitely check into those sites when I get the laptop online. Thank you all for your assistance. When I get the verdict I'll post the results.
Thanks again
-
Do you have Norton Antivirus or any symantec programs on your computer?
-
Can I just ask why JJ?

Download it on working computer. Use USB stick to move it to the bad computer.
-

Norton doesn't like system restore. In order to complete a system restore you have to turn off protection for Norton products. You don't have to turn off Norton - just the protection for Norton products.
This page explains how to turn it off.

I've used Norton for three years... never had that problem. Is it something I should look out for?

I've used Norton for three years... never had that problem
Did you find another person, who can say same thing? ??? ;D
-
Erm not really. I'm just lucky 8)
-
Norton doesn't like system restore
I just learned, this is not a real reason, JJ asked his question.
He's actually planning huge covert operation to remotely remove all Norton installations throughout the world.
That's why, he has to know all possible locations of it ;D ;D :P :P
-
Does that mean I get a refund?? ;D
-
It's so worthless, they offer it for free now (after rebate).....hahahahaha
-
Everyone knocks it but why?
-
For one DLoad and install Process Explorer and see what it eats for lunch...
Then if you are really adventurous ...try uninstalling it.
-
Ok done but I don't understand??

-
well... for one you have twice as many processes as I do, and I have 5 different apps open right now...
Although on the other hand, you are using iTunes... which installs several background services as well.
Try sorting it by processor time, and watch which ones are at the top for a while.
Also why do you have sqlserver? ???
-
CPU usage = 3.07%
-
I downloaded System Look onto another computer then installed it on my lap top. Unfortunately it came up empty
Could not find
I also attempted turning off Norton by following the directions from the link that had been listed and that attempt was Futile as well.
:(

It looks like SR.INF is missing, and you have some system files issues.
Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
-
Clicked on start
Clicked on run and typed in:
sfc / scannow
Then clicked OK
A blank black screen popped up for less than a second
No info or anything
-
This file may be missing as well.
