Not sure if this should be in the virus or software section.
AOL 9.0 is the software in question, when the user types in a url AOL will open up a window within the program and she surfs around. Then in about 60%-75% of the time when she closes the internet window Internet Explorer opens up and starts opening multiple tabs and each tab is the same url as the window in AOL that was just closed.
After about 12-15 tabs open up the computer freezes up and has to be shut down using the power button.
Ad-aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster, AVG Free and Malwarebytes have all found and removed various things, but the problem persists. Also, trying to reset to a previous restore point about 7 weeks ago did not work and we tried that 4 times. Each time a different day yet still past the time of when the problem started. No restore point worked.
The same version of AOL is on a laptop in the same home but no problems with that.
I don't know if this is something that got loaded on the desktop computer in AOL or if there is something attached to IE. She uses Firefox as her default browser which confuses me even more.
Windows XP pro sp3, AOL 9.0, IE7
Any thoughts?

Thanks, unfortunately this is a desktop and not a laptop so access will be when the user is available. I will read over the post and put up logs as I can.

Have you got CA antivirus installed? You also have AVG. Two antivirus programs is not recommended! I'd highly recommend uninstalling one of them.

Ok, I will pass on the news about deleting CA.
Strange things were going on for a little while, when Superantispyware was installed and started, it latched onto AOL and launched that while trying to update. After some clicking of the close button AOL finally closed and the update went on.
The next day the user started the computer and Superantispyware started up and also started AOL. She canceled them both and used msconfig to stop it from launching on startup.
THEN when she opened up IE, AOL would launch and if she allowed it to finish a small box would come up stating that IE was using AOL for internet access. 8-\
So, after the second scan with Hijackthis I uninstalled Superantispyware and unchecked the box that said to always use a dialup connection with AOL.
In network connections there was AOL, America Online and Internet(2). After the uninstall there was only AOL and America Online.
Now IE opens correctly, without AOL. AOL opens and closes without starting multiple IE tabs. Firefox opens correctly.

Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) before starting ComboFix.
Temporarily disable your antivirus, and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
For Windows XP Systems install the Recovery Console:
- If you are using Windows XP and do not already have the Recovery Console installed, please ensure your Internet connection is active (if possible) and click Yes.
- If for some reason your Internet is not working click No.
- If you are not using Windows XP, you will not be prompted.
- When prompted to accept the EULA click OK.
- Accept Microsoft's EULA (Click Yes).
- When you are told that the RC is installed correctly click YES to continue scanning for malware.
When finished ComboFix will produce a log for you.
Post the ComboFix log in your next reply.
Important: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Remember to re-enable your antivirus and antispyware protection when ComboFix is complete.

Wow, looks like making sure is the catch phrase of the day. Just got an SOS email from the user. Opened IE and AOL did not open up like before, but when she went into AOL and opened and closed Facebook, IE opened up with multiple tabs, each tab with the same Facebook page.
I will have to return to the home tomorrow or Saturday to run Combofix.
What could this be? Besides highly annoying, that is.

Would a reinstallation of AOL fix the problem? That would be easier for the user to do on her own.

You could try. If everything else seems in order, then it would be easier to do a simple reinstall.

Ok, we did the file cabinet backup according to instructions from the AOL support site and reinstalled AOL 9.0. After checking various sites it looked like the problem was resolved.
Unfortunately after about 3 hours or so, the user closed down the internet window on AOL and IE opened up a window with multiple tabs of the same page.
And to top it off when we tried to restore the file cabinet we got a message that there was not backup. The file was saved twice in the documents folder as well as once on the desktop. The backup will open up if we use File>Open on the AOL taskbar but in order to get the emails back into AOL each one has to be opened and saved to pfc on the computer. There are hundreds of emails!
I know these are two different problems but the latter would not be in effect without symptoms of the former.
Please, please, any thoughts to fix either are appreciated.

No luck on resetting IE, it was reset but the problem with opening up multiple tabs of the same page on AOL internet closing is still happening. Very VERY annoying.

Ok, fixed the file cabinet problem. The IE problem is still rearing it's ugly head. Now 2 windows open up, each with multiple tabs of the same page that was closed when using AOL to get on the internet. The only way to close the windows is to use the task manager and close AOL and then the IE windows.
I advised that she should use AOL just for her email and to use Firefox for the internet. More complicated than she wants but it should work.
And as another cherry on this sundae of busted, we can not restore to a restore point of 2 months ago. The computer goes through the motions and restarts, but gives the message that it can not be restored to the date chosen. We tried May 1 and May 15 and got the same message.

ok, new developments. The user was having problems with IE opening up after closing the AOL so decided to download IE8. Now the computer appears to be bricked, when the power button is pressed the fan starts, the cd and dvd drives blink but nothing else happens. Tomorrow I am heading there to either get it running or roll back to IE7.
