Post by: two-dogs on June 27, 2009, 04:16:42 PM
I switched from hughes to verizon because it was faster.  My problem is I want to share internet connections with my other computers.  Could some one tell me how or what I will need to get it to work.  The modem is a usb um175 any help on this.......thanks......two-dogs

Are you trying to connect them all through wireless, or will any of the machines be connected with RJ-45?

One with a cable.  I was wondering if I can use my computer with the wireless modem to use the either net connection at the back of the computer to hook to another computer to share the card.

Do you have wireless network cards in all of the computers?

You could use the laptop as a connection point, but lets take this one step at a time. :)

Do you have another hub or router kicking around?

The um175 will allow you to select WAN or LAN.  That would allow you connect the RJ-45 cables to the secondary hub/router and then connect it to the USB connection on the back of the um175.
The WAN/LAN setting is in the Admin options in the router setup of the um175.

Okay, I just looked at the specs on your wrt160n, and they don't mention if it has a USB port on it.
Can you verify this for me?

<edit>  What are you using for an access point?  </edit>

No usb port and I guess what you are saying it would be my either net port at the back of the computer, since the modem does not have an port on it.

I mean do you have a secondary device to relay the signal to the um175, something with an antenna on it.

Okay, here's what I'm thinking.

You should be able to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop.
Then plug the wrt310n into the laptops RJ-45.
Then connect the other computers to the wrt310n via their RJ-45's.

What OS and service pack are you using on the laptop?

Not a laptop a desktop

Hehe, my mistake :)

The desktop that you have the um175 installed on, what OS and service pack is it running?

This is an article on Microsoft's site (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/share_conn_overvw.mspx?mfr=true).  It has detailed information on how to set up the Internet Connection Sharing.
It will take you through that step flawlessly and painlessly(painless is good).
Once you have completed that, or if you have any other questions about this step, let us know.

Remember, this is only step 1 - take your time, my apartment is brutally hot, even with the AC running, so I won't be sleeping for a while.   :D

Now my desktop that has the card in it the usb card is hooked up to the router in one of the 4 ports (either net ports) should it be in the internet port?

That's not the adapter that you want to share.
The adapter that you want to share is the one that has the RJ-45(looks kind of like a large phone plug) jack on it.

Can you go into the device manager and make sure that the other network adapter is listed, and has no yellow or red flags on it?

I'm not sure what you mean, can you rephrase that for me?

Ok what I meant is I have the either net connection at the back of the computer and it is hooked up to the router in one of the for connections for other computers and there is one connection for internet.  I went to the device manager and this is what I see.  As you can see there is one that has a red line in it and I had to replace it with the realtech

Okay, I've been trying to sort out how to explain this to you, so bear with me.

Connect the computers that DON'T have internet to your wrt310n.
Plug the desktop(the one with the um175) into the wrt310n's WAN/Internet connection.
Make sure that in Device Manager that the desktop with the um175 has two working ethernet cards.
Then run the ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) Wizard.

Let me know if part of this seems vague, or you have any troubles with ICS.

If it works flawlessly for you, please let us know, that way I can stop looking for solutions.  :)

According to that I see a RealTek and the um175.

Plug the wrt310n into the RealTek.  That's the one you should use for this.

<edit>  The um175 is your second connection, that's the one that has WAN activity.  </edit>

I didn't mention running the ICS Wizard on the other machine, because I knew that it would tell you to do just that.

I'm so glad that we got that running for you.  Just think of your new found confidence with computers.

Any day now we'll all see you helping others here.  :)
