Title: Windows Task Manager - how to delete processes
Post by: TryingToUnderstand on July 15, 2009, 12:51:51 PM
I'm running XP Home on 3 different computers. Trying to get each of them functioning better.

In the Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) one computer has 51 processes, another has 67 processes, and another 49 processes.

How do I QUICKLY (smile) and EASILY find out what each of these are for (the ones under my name -- not the ones under System)?

And, how do I delete those that are no longer necessary?

I am NOT a super-whiz at fixing computers -- but probably have enough of a grasp to follow clear instructions and know when to 'back off.'

Many thanks!

Type in the processes on a web search, and it should come up what they do. Do you want to end a process for your current computer session, or disable it running whnen you startup your PC?

Hi;,
I want to disable it completely - remove it -- never have to deal with it -- for most of them.

Some of them I would like to only disable at startup.

Thanks!

First write it down, then google the item you want to stop. Leave the SVCHOST alone, they are needed. Once you get your list Start>Run>MSCONFIG and then go to the startup tab. Uncheck each entry and then Apply and then OK and reboot the computer and see how it runs. If it runs fine then do the next in line and then reboot.

This is not a job for beginners, it is best done by someone who knows something about the Windows OS and what needs to run. If you have never worked in the OS itself like this DO NOT DO IT.

It seems to me you have programs that you have installed that are all running at startup.

OK --
I'll give some thought to this. Perhaps try it on the computer I think has the least potential for being useful for me.

I really appreciate the help.

DO NOT mess around if you don't know much , on CH page you will see search to the right , bring up task

manager , type in each process and read about it MOST of them will be needed

Thanks! Shall proceed with caution -- mostly looking - not changing anything!
Really appreciate.

Thanks for the link lead. I've looked it over -- most of it is a little over my head. However, I'll look it over again tomorrow when my head is fresh!

I've made a list of all the various processes -- and have been finding what they are for. I've decided to just leave all of them alone.

Thanks again!
