Title: Hard drive changed letter, and I can't change it back.
Post by: Arwin on July 16, 2009, 08:02:59 PM
I have a system (with Vista on it, I'm one of the few who doesn't loathe Vista) with two internal and one external hard drive, among other things I keep my Itunes stuff on the external drive.

At one stage I was having trouble with fixing the drive letter in place, it kept on resetting itself, so I went through computer management and locked it into being drive K.

Yesterday I unplugged the hard drive (accidentally) and this morning, not yesterday, it's reset itself to being drive M.  Everything on that drive no longer works..

I've tried going through computer management again and it will let me reset the letter but not to drive K (I'm locked out)..  Which is where I want/need it..

I need to get rid of the old settings but I'm not sure how, does anyone have any ideas?

A.

Do you have anything assigned to a K: drive? (I mean, has something else commandeered to letter).

If so, either unplug it (if possible) or change it via disk management.

I'm wracking my brain on this one, since I had the exact same issue with a CD-ROM drive, and I do recall the "fix" was easier done then said...

Nothing else has grabbed the letter, it's simply the old settings.

It comes up on my comp (now, wasn't doing it 10 mins ago) as being an external CD, it's not there's nothing plugged in there..

It's got me lost at the moment.

Give the drive a Volume label and re-assign it...
You should be using "Safely Remove Hardware'....you risk losing all your data.

I know  ::)

I was actually trying to reset another USB plug when I grabbed it by mistake.
