I recieved the following e-mail today. I decided to post it rather than just report it because this is how they sucker people into helping them launder money. I know other people may have recieved tis and I hope none of you fall into this! You can go to jail for money laundering...
P.S. I can forward the e-mail to anyone if necessary...

Hello dear,
Dear with profound respect and humble submission,I got your contact in http://www.computerhope.com and I beg to state the following few lines for your kind consideration, I hope you will spare some of your valuable minutes to read the following appeal with sympathetic mind. I must confess that it is with great hopes, joy and enthusiasm that I write you this mail which I know and believe by the faith that it must surely find you in good condition of health. My name is Miss Ameena Mohammad, I am the only Daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Ammar Mohammad. My father was a highly reputable business magnet who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days.
It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on the 20th May 2008. Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of mine who travelled with him at that time. But God knows the truth! My mother died when I was just 6yrs old, and since then my father took me so special.
Before the death of my father on May 2008, he called me and informed me that he has the sum of Six Million, Five Hundred thousand United State Dollars.(USD$6,500,000.00) he deposited in a private Bank here in Abidjan Cote D'Ivoire. He told me that he deposited the money in my name, and also gave me all the necessary legal documents regarding to this deposit with the Bank.
I am just 21 years old and a university undergraduate and really don't know what to do. Now I want an honest and God fearing partner overseas who I can transfer this money with his assistance and after the transaction I will come and reside permanently in your country till such a time that it will be convinient for me to return back home if I so desire. This is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually brought sorrow to my life. I also want to invest the fund under your care because I am ignorant of business world.
I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded. Now permit me to ask these few questions:
1. Can you honestly help me from your heart?
2. Can I completely trust you?
3. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you after the fund has being transfeered to your account and i come over to meet you ?
Please, consider this and get back to me as soon as possible. Immedaitely I confirm your willingness, I will send to you my Picture and also inform you more details involved in this matter.
Anticipating hearing from you soon.
Thanks and may God bless you for your concern to help an orphan like me.
Kind Regards,
Miss Ameena Mohammad.

This could be some type of investment scam, like "give me a dollar, I'll give you two" but what the people who give that person thousands of dollars, they really don't return your money.
-
seems more like imbezzling an id theft.
-
it's a 419 scam.

well all these are phising in some manner
-
well all these are phising in some manner
Phishing is considerably different.
What these people want to do is send you a check or fake money order, have you put it into your account and then have you send them money without waiting for the check or money order to clear. It will bounce and you are out however much money you sent them.
-
whats the difference? How I know they have your check number but I dont know.....
-
They usually aren't after information, what they are after is money.
They send you a check for a ten thousand dollars and tell you to send them one thousand of it immediately, you can keep the rest. The trouble comes when the check they sent you bounces and you are out a thousand dollars with no recourse.

It is quite worrying that they are getting email addresses from Computer Hope.
-
I've won $2,000,000.00 on the UK Lottery and all I had to do was give my full name and street address to some stranger I've never met on the internet!!
;D

Hey Dairyman,
It's nice to see you again! :)
and yeah Ameena is not trustworthy.

Somehow I doubt that they are getting our email addresses from CH. I just can't see Nathan giving them away.
-
The only way I can see them getting e-mails from CH is when someone posts their e-mail in the topic or in some other place where you don't need to log in to see. But even those are shortly edited out by an admin/moderator after...
Oh, and thanks Ivy. :)
-
The E-mails are in the profile... same with MSN.
they are hidden by default now, though... I think...
-
I had just put my mouse over the MSN icon and I immediately noticed, you don't have to log in to see it. :o
Look at the status bar.

probably why they have it.

Harvester bots are pretty simple to understand. They could google search for pages containing @*.com (a google trick) and then add any email addresses it finds to a database for which could be for sale. Diving deep on black-market chats (legitimate ones that is) you may just find your email address for sale along with thousands of others, or even personal details you thought never could wind up on the internet. Advertising on the internet is a big buisness now.
-
google doesn't support wildcards... they are "spambots", not google searches.
Otherwise accurate I think.

I wasn't sure how they worked, but I heard that posting your email on the internet is asking for spam, so I just thought up a way they could get it.
-
Its especially bad when you got hacked. The best thing is changeing the password if possible.
-
I just got that email...I think I should scambait "her", what should I say?
Oh by the way, she uses yahoo. Yahoo.cn.jp I think.
-
I tried scam baiting a person who was "in the hospital" It didnt go so well. All I wanted him to do was to find people to dress up in fishing gear holding a sign saying "Weve been baited by bad fish bait shop!"
Dont steal that one. Think of your own because im doing it again :P
-
I'm surprise I never goten any such things too much if at all. Not even this I know of.

It's probably a bot of sorts.
No. It's a mass-email; and then a human checks those that reply.
-
How would it be able to generate the mail list?
-
How would it be able to generate the mail list?

in either case that isn't their picture. They often use pictures of others, to protect themselves.
-
Ya they do. One time I was trying to bait one and I sent my picture and it was chuck norris and the file was still named chuck norris and they had no idea ;D ;D

Getting a picture of Chuck Norris in your e-mail... Imagine the dissapointment. Forget baiting, lets all just spam them Chuck Norris photos.
