We've run this poll a few different times over the last nine years and felt it was time once again for August's poll to once again see what Internet browser everyone is using primarily. Feel free to comment about what you like or don't like about your primary browser, what would cause you to switch, etc. If you've voted for "other" please mention what other browser you're using.
Below are the past poll results for 2000, 2003, and 2004.
Internet Explorer = 46.71% | 68.95% | 42.49%
Mozilla = 0 | 0 | 39.29%
Netscape = 45.57% | 12.98% | 6.13%
Opera = 4.77% | 9.49% | 7.41%
Other = 2.95% | 8.58% | 4.68%
All past monthly polls and results can also be found on the Computer Hope poll page (http://www.computerhope.com/polls.htm).

My fox heart will beat forever..... Muharharharhar!
-
Using Firefox mainly, but also use IE8, Netscape, Opera, Safari, and Chrome.
-
Broni...
Check the Chrome account.
;)
-
FireFox.
-
Firefox, with the occasional foray into Internet Explorer. I had Opera installed for a short while, and then I started getting "friend" requests. Now, I expect that sort of thing with Facebook, but from my browser??
-
Broni...
Check the Chrome account.
Heh, fortunately Chrome is blocked by the firewall. Used for testing purposes only. ;D
-
;D
-
Somebody must be using IE. :)
-
Broni...
Check the Chrome account.
Nice job, guys ;D
Yesterday, Carbon, today kpac.....keep coming....
patio, I feel like we can retire pretty soon :)
F-I-R-E-F-O-X!
-
Heh, fortunately Chrome is blocked by the firewall. Used for testing purposes only. ;D
Did I mention I use SSL and a hardware firewall and proxy?
-
When you'll receive monthly statement from your bank, you'll see, it doesn't matter ;D
-
Good thing I don't receive a bank statement then, as I don't have a bank account. :D
-
Oh maybe it was your parents account then...same last name...;D
-
i use IE7 , why should i change ?
-
Because IE Sucks. 8)
-
FIREFOX ROCKS!!
-
FIREFOX ROCKS!!
Mine has stopped responding twice already tonight. It don't rock that much!
-
Firefox baby! 8)
-
Internet Explorer is what i use. I think is good but fire fox is good to. Be my choice is *Internet Explorer!!*
-
My primary browser is Firefox. I may ocssioinally use IE 7. I also have Chrome installed just to take a look at it. I've noticed Chrome actually has a feature the web designers may like. If you view page source to see the coding for a web page, it displays the code with line numbers and color-coded HTML tags.
-
firefox!!!!!!!
-
it displays the code with line numbers and color-coded HTML tags.
Firefox displays colour-coded tags...
-
Currently IE8, used to use Firefox but after an HD crash a month back, my dad was very hesitant to install anything(And for a good reason too)
-
macdad , i had ie8 in twice and took it out , i'll just stick to ie7
-
Firefox!!!!! ;D
-
I also have Chrome installed just to take a look at it.
patio? In your books already? ;D
-
Mozilla Firefox
IE is not available on Linux.
I also occasionally use Netscape, Flock, and IE 7 (on my Windows PC).
Why was Flock not an option? It is just as major as Netscape or Opera.
-
I think Flock is a little young to be as successful.
-
Firefox, with the occasional foray into Internet Explorer. I had Opera installed for a short while, and then I started getting "friend" requests. Now, I expect that sort of thing with Facebook, but from my browser??
Most of the regulars here know that I like Opera. I have never gotten any "friend requests". That is very strange. I use Opera as my main browser on my three main computers and have never had that happen.
Some people complain that they don't like Opera simply because they are not familiar with it. If you were to use it as your main browser for two weeks and get used to it you would probably love it as much as I do. Opera has tons of great features and I prefer it over FF, Chrome and IE.
-
You know, maybe I'll give it another try...just don't send me any friend requests! (I'm kidding! I think they were spam from the Opera community or something goofy.)
-
Friend requests- the sincerest form of flattery. Kind of like spam. "OMG! I was specially selected for this sweepstakes message! I feel like a potato!"
-
I don't even know how to send a friend request through Opera and I've been using it for almost two years :D
Did you get them in your email or what? I don't understand.
-
Hmmm....the poll says:
Chrome - 0
but I know, who's using it on this board, since my joint account with patio keeps growing ;D
Reveal yourself ;D
-
I use to use Chrome, but now I don't, I like the new improvements in Mozilla! (switched a week ago)

Notice the lack of Safari votes... :D

Eh, Broni, why the fuss about Chrome? Can you clue us in on the "joint account" thing?
By the way, I installed Chrome to see how certain web page features render in it, compared to FF and IE. I dabble in web design and checking web pages in different browser is something web developers do, you see.
-
Eh, Broni, why the fuss about Chrome? Can you clue us in on the "joint account" thing?
OMG, it's very, very long story, and I assume, it all started here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,65167.0.html with my reply #42 on page 3.
-
BTW, BC_Programmer loves to write stories, and if he sees this, he'll explain even better :)

FireFox.

What the *censored*...?!

satisfactory
-
BTW, BC_Programmer loves to write stories, and if he sees this, he'll explain even better :)
Why must I always be the one with the verbose stories. Oh well.
Anyway, it all started when computerruler was bounding through the forest.
Little Computeruler bounding through the forest
picking up the field mice and biting off their heads
anyway, then one day, Broni say this, and said, "*censored*! did you just bite off their heads?" And, being the conservation officer, issued him a chrome account manifesto. Computeruler was all "that's not what really happened" and "I enjoy sauerkraut", but it was to no avail. Anyway, CR continued biting the heads of the field mice, and one day, there was a field mice shortage. And Broni was all, "I'm going to have to ask for payment for biting off the heads of all these field mice", and computeruler said he'd give him gift cards instead.
He has yet to deliver.
-
LOL
-
BC, you're all confused...LOL
We're talking here about, how patio, and I opened joint bank account to draw some funds through unsecure Chrome accounts.....
-
well yes, that came after, in a related story. It actually started when you created a life insurance company for the field mice, which was actually why you weren't particularly appreciative of the whole "biting their heads off" bit.
-
Hmmm....the poll says:
Chrome - 0
but I know, who's using it on this board
I'm sure my people use it! I use an early devolopers version of Chrome on Linux. But with only 1 choice, a person can only choose the browser they use most.
Notice the lack of Safari votes... :D
Yeah, Safari's not bad but not many people obviously use it as their main browser (at least I hope not). If I owned a Mac I'd still use Firefox mainly, not Safari.
-
BC, you're all confused...LOL
We're talking here about, how patio, and I opened joint bank account to draw some funds through unsecure Chrome accounts.....
Hmm, unsecure? This sure inidcates otherwise: Chrome only browser left standing after day one of Pwn2Own (http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2009/03/chrome-is-the-only-browser-left-standing-in-pwn2own-contest.ars)
-
Safari just seemed to be a whipped-up Mac version of IE(In my opinion)
But still any browser is fine for normal use
-
I recently heard of a browser called dillo (http://www.dillo.org/). I wonder if anyone here has tried it.
-
Firefox forever. By far one of the best web browser out there.
-
I recently heard of a browser called dillo
I don't like the name. It's easy to create typo ;D
-
Yes, Brillo pads are quite nice for washing pots and pans. ;)
-
I like using IE(Internet Exploder).
-
I don't like the name. It's easy to create typo ;D
I was thinking the same thing!! ;D
-
Hey, you're too young.....LOL
-
;D
-
Hey, you're too young.....LOL
Why thanks man, that's the best compliment that I've had all week.
-
I recently heard of a browser called dillo (http://www.dillo.org/). I wonder if anyone here has tried it.
I've heard of it but not tried it.
It's a lightweight browser for Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X.
-

Oh, I wish I had noticed that it is not for Windows. I would not have mentioned it.
-
Oh, I wish I had noticed that it is not for Windows. I would not have mentioned it.
Why not? It's a browser.
-
Why not? It's a browser.
Why? You don't have something against Linux, do you???
I'm glad you mentioned it, I run Ubuntu so I may try it.
Also on their webpage it says Dillo is not recommended for use as a main browser, but is often preferred as a backup.

Mozilla makes Browsing fast then Internet Explorer
It Does does not crashess like Internet Explorer. :)
-
Mozilla makes Browsing fast then Internet Explorer
It Does does not crashess like Internet Explorer. :)
I agree. Everytime I open IE 7 on XP it crashes.
-
You guys have messed up computers.
I don't like, and I don't use IE, but if I have to open it once in a while, it never crashes.
You've been painting IE as some kind of monster.
It's not.
It's just a lesser browser, that's all.
-
Couldn't have said it better myself...
Yes it's inferior...but no it's not the issue most times.
-
If your IE looks like this, then it explains everything...
-
How did you steal my Homepage ? ?
-
I found out, that you secretly installed Chrome ;D
That's how ;D
-
So, does that mean that now YOU have all the money, Broni? ;)
-
Nah, with patio I'll always share :)
-
;)
-
Sorry -- didn't mean to imply greed -- I expected maybe Chrome couldn't help itself... ;D
-
You guys have messed up computers.
Maybe so, I'm getting ready to reformat (and switch to Ubuntu - XP dual boot) my PC so the IE files might be messed. It also only seems to crash on one user.
It's just a lesser browser, that's all.
True, same with Safari and some others.
-
I use IE 8 for local connection only, best for our application.
Overall, I use Firefox 3.5.2 for my daily stuffs.
-
If your IE looks like this, then it explains everything...
That can't be real :o
-
I use primarily Firefox most of the time. Occasionally I do use IE8 when a site doesn't work in FF.
-
That can't be real :o
I haven't seen it that bad, but I've seen people running IE with about a third of their screen occupied by toolbars.
-
IE7 or 8 are more secure than any other browser on Vista or Win7 because of Protected Mode that sandboxes the application and add-ons using the Integrity Levels. This way even a still unknown menace can't do big damages because won't have sufficient rights to write/delete/execute nothing harmful.
It is so effective that even Mozilla team plans to add it in FireFox to improve its security:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_2/Protected_mode
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Feature_Brainstorming:Security
It is something people don't consider when comparing browsers and bashing IE.
-
IE7 or 8 are more secure
Yes, in Bill's dreams.
-
That can't be real :o
It can, if I go download all the toolbars I can find in a google search, I'd have at least that many.
Overall, I use Firefox 3.5.2 for my daily stuffs.
Actually, I prefer Firefox 3.x over Firefox 3.5 because Firefox 3.5 has some annoyances.
Like when / if I have 20+ tabs up I have to close them all before shutting down, otherwise it will automatically save all of them. Firefox 3.x would always ask me.
IE7 or 8 are more secure than any other browser on Vista or Win7 because of Protected Mode.
Not true, MS will always say that kind of thing. Firefox is at worst just as stable as IE.
-

I believe TabMixPlus still leaves this option open...

I think the point was that's not someones browser ::)

Make sure, your FF is not set to last option:

Doggone it Broni...
You got me SnagIt and i'm still not as good as you....
;D
Carry on....

Practice, practice, practice......hehehehe

Same old tagline from IE4. OR maybe it was IE3. The fact that IE even needs a "protected mode" to be "secure" points to larger problems with the entire handling of security in IE.
The vulnerabilities in IE wouldn't be so bad if they didn't also become windows vulnerabilities due to Windows using the IE DLLs for various functions all around.
"ActiveX controls can only execute when you allow them" except where they circumvent the policy
"the MSJVM protects your PC from malicious java applets" as long as they don't use COM, in which case they can create any COM object they want and use it however they please
This way even a still unknown menace can't do big damages because won't have sufficient rights to write/delete/execute nothing harmful.
the fact that any "menace" can get to the point where it can execute is the problem, not what rights said program has.

Here is the current browser market share according to Net Applications:
I think IE is actually lower then that.

@harry 48
1) speed
2) addons (firefox)
3) looks nice (chrome,firefox)
)IE sometimes stuffs up the number
5)and you can do much more stuff with it

IE7 and Firefox
I hate IE8 It has problems with this website and I hate the compatibility button.. >:( In fact, that's why I use IE7 still
-
I usually use Advanced Browser because it's alot faster than IE, although i do also have IE8, Firefox, Ace Explorer too, just in case i need them.
:)

http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html
That article is way too outdated (over 2 years)!
It only had Firefox 2 (which is way slow then 3.x), no Safari, no Chrome.
As a result Opera stole all the best scores!
The article I had was only a month or 2 old.

::)
And it was from a biassed source...
-
Opera stole all the best scores
That's because it's the best browser. Have you ever tried it?
-
it's probably no different now, to be honest.
Firefox 3... doesn't really seem much faster then FF2.... but I like the new interface.
In either case- you can't really base a browser decision based solely on speed. The biggest decider of speed is going ot be the connection itself. a few milliseconds to display a table or something isn't going to make a difference if it already took five seconds to simply download the table contents.
-
i have...not convinced nor will be that it's the best...
However carry on...
-
That's because it's the best browser. Have you ever tried it?
Yah, it was decent but not anything i'd rave about. And it was from a biassed source...
The guys at Maximum Pc would flop dead if they heard you say that.
-
So would a fish. Although I think the fish would be doing so more because it can't breathe air rather then some sort of shock from what I said.
-
LOL ;D
-
Well, you are a breathtaking kinda guy, BC... ;D
-
yeah, I perform for a group of fish in a club. I take their breath away. I'm so funny I leave them gasping for air, flopping around on the floor in death throes of humour. then they all stop moving and the janitor comes in, basically sees this one person on a stage and thousands of dead fish on the floor... and says, "I'm not cleaning that mess up."
-
"I'm not cleaning that mess up."
Yeah, but is the janitor referring to the floor, or the stage? ;D
-
It's that time of year! ;)

I'm using Firefox now and have been since version 1.5. I used Netscape from '95 until I got FF. I have IE and use it when I have to (going to MS pages or the increasingly rare pages that still don't work with FF) and I've had to use IE at work. I don't hate IE, I just prefer not to use it if I have a choice.

Using IE8, go to Yahoo! Mail (http://mail.yahoo.com)
Using Firefox 3.5.2, go to Yahoo! Mail (http://mail.yahoo.com)
Compare the execution time.

I get 7 seconds with IE.
And 3.5 seconds with Firefox.

FireFox ;D
-
I get 7 seconds with IE.
And 3.5 seconds with Firefox.
Here's mine.
1st attempt (Open Link in New Tab)
In Firefox 3.5.2 - 00:00:05.30
In IE 8 - 00:00:9.43
2nd attempt (type "mail.yahoo.com" on the address bar of navigation toolbar)
In Firefox 3.5.2 - 00:00:04.06
In IE 8 - 00:00:07.77

I use IE8, but I also have Firefox and Google Chrome.
-
Heck the IE, all products from MS are garbages, thus Garbagesoft. use FF and Safari instead.
-

What like windows....
-
I suppose that's why more businesses use Microsoft Office than any other software...must be the "garbage" factor... ::)
-
I suppose that's why more businesses use Microsoft Office than any other software...must be the "garbage" factor... ::)
The actual reason why most use MS Office is because most use Windows and get the latest Microsoft software. MS Office is in fact no better then OpenOffice. If most businesses used Mac or Linux we would different office software leading. 8)
-
Here's mine.
1st attempt (Open Link in New Tab)
In Firefox 3.5.2 - 00:00:05.30

In Firefox 3.5.2 - 00:00:04.06
In IE 8 - 00:00:07.77
You do realise all these results are sporadic and are determined by network traffic at any given point in time correct ? ?
-
If most businesses used Mac or Linux we would different office software leading
Cheap shot: if more businesses could use Linux, we would have different office software.
-
Cheap shot: if more businesses could use Linux, we would have different office software.
And you would have to spend a lot more training your staff!
-
I'd prefer to use Internet explorer to Safari... If Apple has to get people to download it through itunes updates I don't see what good it could be.
Heck the IE, all products from MS are garbages, thus Garbagesoft. use FF and Safari instead.
Or even better, do it the Linux way, Copy and paste fragments of C code from other projects, and then complain to the developers of those projects you copy-pasted from when it seg-faults and/or dumps core. Within that complaint make sure to at some point make a snide remark regarding microsoft, that is the way- Call MS programs "Garbage" While simultaneously being unable to create anything that works half as good as the MS equivalent. But wait! It doesn't crash when you do *insert random series of events* on the settings page- because it doesn't have a settings page. as such, it must be better then the MS equivalent, not counting the instantaneous segmentation violation, just press ignore.
-
All the more reason to just develop an app yourself, eh BC? ;)
-
I love to use google chrom :D.But Also use IE7 and mozilla

I love firefox. IE was always giving me shingles, so I switched and never looked back.

Have you tried Opera? It has lots of nifty features plus tons of skins and widgets. The newest release, Opera 10, has this thing called "Turbo". It helps speed up slow internet connections by using proxy servers to compress data and image traffic before it reaches the browser. There is a bit of image distortion when you have it at full acceleration but I keep mine on automatic most of the time.
By the way, have you tried removing FF and installing a new copy?
