Post by: evilfantasy on August 11, 2009, 11:11:47 AM
Yep. Google is trying to get back it's lost market share from the launch of Bing by developing a new Google Search. Code name 'Google Caffeine'.

Blame Java... That's how it started.

"ohh, a programming language named after  a beverage, how quaint!"

Oh man. Don't get us into another Java conversation LOL. It's only been a few weeks since the last one. :P

I get a 404 at google's sandbox.

What browser? (would be funny if it were Chrome!)

Safari. I don't know how a 404 can be caused by a browser. Its a file not found error, not incompatible coding.

Its a file not found error

no it isn't. 404 means the server was unable to understand the query put forth by the browser. usually- yes, a HTML file; but with PHP and PHP arguments it can easily mean missing argument, an invalid argument, etc.

And obviously since the server relies on the browser to determine what to look for it is apparent that the browser plays an integral role in wether that item is found.

Thank you BC, because some sites that I visit, if I misspell a page name, then I get. "404 File Not Found" error.

This is the error I get when trying to view the link:
"The requested URL /m was not found on this server."

well yeah, when it's say, an HTML file on the server, the server might return "file not found" as it's description; the "requested URL" bit is more specific, since technically you aren't referencing files/folders on the remote server, but rather passing text that is parsed in whatever way the server wants.... most obviously use a folder/file format, but forums and so forth don't store each topic as a separate HTML file but rather generate the HTML on the fly using the SQL database, and querying the database using the PHP variables passed in. (action, topic, etc...)

99.99 percent of the time a 404 is caused by either the website or your browser/internet connection. In this case I would have to say it's your browser.

Its a file not found error, not incompatible coding.

Is it just me...  ??? ??? ???

Because when I click your link it redirects me to your link /m which is then followed by the error.

It looks exactly the same   ;)

I hope the change the way pages are ranked so good pages (even if they don't have lots of links) are ranked higher for their quality.

Using your iTouch by any chance? I think /m might be Google's mobile device version.

Actually PHP can be used to generate a 404 error - if for example the user accesses a config file directly from the browser, PHP could return a 404 error even though the file does exist.
