Title: opening links and redirected webpages (msn)
Post by: standingonarooftop on August 14, 2009, 08:32:42 AM
Hi there! I recently bought a new laptop and I'm trying to work out a few kinks. I noticed that when we click the link in MSN messenger to open up emails, the inbox opens up on a page thats already open. (i.e. if I have yahoo.com open on another webpage, that webpage gets redirected to the email inbox). In addition, the email opens yet another page, this time it reads 'error' and asks me to reput in a password, even though my inbox is already open on that previous page. Is there a way to get it to stop redirecting open pages and just to open a link normally? Thanks!

"... this issue usually occurs if your Internet Explorer cache is corrupted, every time that you log on to the Internet, Cookies are stored in your computer's cache. Sometimes, instead of accessing the Web site directly from the server, your browser detects the Web site content from the cache. This will cause you to have difficulty in accessing your e-mail inbox thru Messenger or viewing some pages.

To fix this, you just need to clear your cache and delete your cookies to maintain your browser's performance.

Here are the steps to guide you through the process:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click the General tab.

4. Under Browsing History, click Delete, and then click Delete Cookies.

5. Click Yes.

6. Click Close, and then click OK.

Have the computer look for newer versions of stored pages only when you visit the page, and maximize the amount of disk space that the computer uses.

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. On the General tab, click Browser History, and then click Settings.

4. Click Every time I visit the page.

5. Under Disk Space to Use, click and then hold the up arrow until the highest value is set.

6. Click OK two times.

Reset the Security and Privacy settings to the default:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click the Security tab, and then click Default Level.

4. Click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.

5. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Restore Advanced Settings.

6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Re-launch Windows Live Messenger and try to sign in again. Verify if the issue remains.

If the issue remains unresolved, it is also possible that you have enabled the feature in Windows Live Messenger to prompt for your password when you visit a Windows Live ID site from within Messenger. To rectify this issue, you need to disable the option in the Window Live Messenger security to always ask for a password when checking Hotmail or opening other Windows Live ID-enabled Web pages and try to set your Internet Explorer as the default browser. Follow the steps below.

1. Start Windows Live Messenger.

2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

3. In the Options dialog box, click Security, and then clear the Always ask me for my password when checking Hotmail or opening other Windows Live ID-enabled Web pages check box.

4. Click OK.

To set Internet Explorer as the default browser:

Note: If you perform this step, Internet Explorer would be your default browser on the computer.

1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. On the Programs tab, select the Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser. check box.

4. Click OK.

5. Close all browsers.

6. Start Internet Explorer, and then click OK to use Internet Explorer as your default browser.

I hope these steps resolve your concern with Windows Live Messenger. However, if these steps did not resolve the issue you are encountering, please reply back to us and give the details of what happened when you performed the steps provided."

Hi there! No I do not have firefox, and I just recieved another email from them, which I followed, and those steps did not work either. Messenger inbox seems to work perfectly fine on all my family's other computers, just not this new one. Thanks again for your help!

I understand that you are still having the same problem when you try to access your inbox via Windows Live Messenger even after going through the previous steps...
Please be informed that the previous steps usually resolved the issue, however, since it didn't work for you, possible that there are some Windows Live Messenger files that became corrupted. These corrupted files could prevent the program from working properly.

To remove all corrupted files, we will perform a clean installation of Windows Live Messenger. Please be informed that the steps that I'm about to give you is different from a normal installation of a program as we will be removing Windows Live Messenger along with its associated files from your computer before downloading a fresh one.

Lengthy as they may seem, the steps are important and should be followed carefully. They may be confusing but I would appreciate your patience in accomplishing each step:

To perform a clean installation of Windows Live Messenger with screenshots of each step, please visit http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!15378.entry. Otherwise, please refer the steps below:

d. Select Uninstall, click Continue.

e. Under Select the programs you want to uninstall, tick the checkbox on all programs (Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Toolbar, Writer), click Continue.

Note: For revert-back scenarios, all the Windows Live Essentials products must be CHECKED before clicking Continue to uninstall them.

2. Remove the temporary files and folders from the computer:

a. Click Start, type cleanmgr in the text box, and then press ENTER.

b. In the Disk Cleanup options window, click My Files only.

Since nothing else is working for you, it's time you install Firefox.
