Title: folding not working right , need help
Post by: harry 48 on August 16, 2009, 04:23:59 PM
i have 4 friends folding in my name and they all say it's working , but , in my status only 1 pc has been working in 50 days

and worse no pc's  have been working in 7 days , mine is on every night , but is very very slow at folding

what's going wrong

i think the F@H system is buggy
they should get a super computer instead of wasting peoples processing power
now no flames
its just an opinon

an awfully ill-thought out opinion. "Wasting" people processing power. that's an interesting way of describing the use of otherwise idle CPU cycles.

even know i dont like the system
i got it working and about 25 % of the day i am folding (to my suprise)
----edit----
i am at 15% of one work unit right now

Taken from F@H Faq:

Modern supercomputers are essentially clusters of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. The speed of these processors is comparable to (and often slower than) those found in PCs! Thus, if an algorithm (like ours) does not need the fast networking, it will run just as fast on a supercluster as a supercomputer. However, our application needs not the hundreds of processors found in modern supercomputers, but hundreds of thousands of processors. Hence, the calculations performed on Folding@home would not be possible by any other means! Moreover, even if we were given exclusive access to all of the supercomputers in the world, we would still have fewer computing cycles than we do with the Folding@home cluster! This is possible since PC processors are now very fast and there are hundreds of millions of PCs sitting idle in the world.

Hope you stay folding after your benchmark run, fight the good fight  ;)

as long as i can keep from thermal shutdown i will keep folding
but i have it so it only runs on core 2
and do my calculations on core 1
83* C is not so good for temps
----edit----
i edit my posts too often
i just think that they should inprove there program
and how do they know that the program will give them a bad fold?
that could cause some serouis problems u know

It's possible that the computers that are folding for you aren't completing units very fast.  Do you know roughly what processors they're using?

smeezekitty - if your temperatures are that bad there's something wrong with your cooling.  Don't blame folding@home, it's your choice whether or not to run it just as it's your choice to run any intensive program.  If F@H raises your temperatures that much, a game or anything else intensive will be even worse, so maybe you should rip into the game designers for taking advantage of modern processors?
I'm not trying to be harsh, all I'm saying is that this is a hardware and possibly an attitude problem, not a software problem.  There are many easy ways to fix the problems you're having, if that's what you want then feel free to ask for help.

I just recently got over my Temp problems.  For me, F@H actually pushed my temps 10C higher than gaming.  I was still folding at 100C up until my heatsink came in the mail, though I wouldn't recommend it, I'm just stubborn like that.  For me, it was the stock i7 heatsink operating very poorly.  They aren't good to begin with, but mine was doing even worse.  Tried to reseat it, but no luck.  Ended up installing a Scythe Mugen 2 HS, pretty happy with the results.

They went and got a supercomputer -- all of us.

What does it say of your opinion when you have to ask not to be "flamed?"

It's not unlike me standing up in the midst of your favorite sports group or hobby, and stating, "You guys suck!"  "Now, don't get angry..."   :o

Do you know roughly what processors are in the other machines that are folding for you?
They may just not have completed units yet if they're not very fast, the units are large, or the machines aren't on for a long time.

i have not got a clue and i dont like to ask , but surely no matter what they have it would show up on the status ( as post no.1 ) that the pc's are folding

Only when a machine has completed at least one unit in the specified time will it show up on the stats.  Just installing F@H won't make it show.

i know what your saying , but , if 4 pc's have it d'loaded and they are all on and f@h is working on the screen

below they should show up as active processors , yes/no

Yes. If you have multiple computers they should all show up as active processors. However, they'll only show up once a WU has been completed on that computer.

C H A , thank you i can only wait and see , i'm nearly 2 weeks now folding a wu 0/300 and it's still at 207/300  very very slow
