Hi guys,
I was just wondering why Windows 2000 is commonly called 2K?
I've always known it was called 2K just never knew why.

"K" is the metric prefix "Kilo" which means 1000....

BC, Is 2K Also got something to do with year 2K?

well sorta, the same thing applies to the year, that is- thousand=K.
I guess you could apply it to any measurement, Although I suppose you might get strange looks if you say "I've been in like for 1K hours!" ;)

Just a similar name.
The Year 2000 became abbreviated as Y2K (as BC has explained, with the K for kilo). The abbreviation got a lot of attention as the start of the new millenium, which was technically incorrect -- the year 2001 was the start of the new millenium, but ninety percent of people were like, "Whatever..."
Then the whole mess with all the computer systems which were not going to be able to handle the date change. It was kind of like the people above -- most computer systems were like, "Whatever..." Most computers didn't care.
Windows 2000 simply became known as Win2K (three syllables) -- not in any direct connection with Y2K, because Win2K, as with other versions of Windows and the hardware running it, could handle the date change. It was the older computer systems -- legacy systems -- mainframe systems -- computers long controlling power grids, railroads, etc. which were thought to be the danger.

They should have just started with Windows 1, and named each suceeding O.S. 2,3,4, etc. Why they have to jump around is beyond me-Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME,
2000, XP Home, XP Pro, ad nauseum. Why not just 1,2,3 etc.? (Answer: It would be too easy!).

Because that is a little boring also, don't you think? I much prefer the name Vista instead of Windows 6.

Windows 95 (for home), here's where it gets off-track
Windows NT 4.0 (for office)
Windows 98 (for home)
Windows 2000 (for office), some call it Windows NT 5.0
Windows Millenium, (for home)
Windows XP-Home
Windows XP-Professional, some call it Windows NT 5.1
Windows Vista, some call it Windows NT 6.0
Windows 7, see...back on track again

And to add to that:
- Windows XP Home is also NT 5.1
- and Windows 7 is 6.1
You can notice by this that XP and 2000 have a very similar core and Vista and 7 have a very similar core. Most Windows 2000 drivers will work on XP (example: I have a printer with Windows 2000 drivers but not XP drivers so I always install the 2K drivers on XP Pro and it works perfectly) also proving this.

they ALL have versions numbers... the marketing names are different.
