Hi,
I have a dell desktop computer, about four years old, that I just recently started experiencing a problem with. I few weeks back I bought a new keyboard because the keys on the original keyboard were sticking. I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse that work by "connecting" to a thing that plugs into a USB port on my computer. A few days back I experienced a bit of trouble, where the computer would not recognize the mouse or the keyboard. I restarted the computer a few times, and pressed the "connect" button on the mouse and keyboard and got it to work just fine.
Last night, I experienced the same problem, except this time I can not get the computer to recognize the mouse or keyboard. I have tried using all of the USB ports on my computer. I have tried restarting and also completely unplugging the computer from the powersource and then restarting. Finally, I have tried using the original mouse and keyboard that came with the computer (that still work, but apparently just not with my computer right now).
You might also need to know that my computer is password protected, so I can not get to the start menu or anything, because I can't use my keyboard to enter in the password.
Any and all help would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Are the batteries in the keyboard and mouse rechargeable?
If they aren't have you tried new ones?
-
The batteries are not rechargeable, but I have replaced the batteries in the mouse and the keyboard (even though they are only a few weeks old) and new batteries do not make a difference.
I have also tested it out with a different keyboard and mouse, a set that is not wireless that connects right into the computer using a USB port, and the same issue holds true - they are not recognized by the computer.
-
Will your keyboard at least get you into the BIOS?
-
Nope.
-
Can you borrow a keyboard/mouse that does not connect by USB?
-
Any problems showing in Device Manager...USB ports, keyboard, mouse?.....what about drivers for the new hardware...

She can't use her keyboard or mouse :P
-
It's she... :)
And, I do not have access to a mouse or keyboard that connects in a way other than the USB ports.

Sorry changed it ;)
-
No worries.
Any suggestions on how to get my computer to recognize the mouse and keyboard?
-
I'm still thinking. Anybody else?
-
It sounds to me that your USB drivers are messed up. Unless you can get a keyboard and mouse that go into the ports (non USB) at the back of your computer I don't see anyway around it. Someone else may have a better idea if you hang on. :)
-
If the USB drivers are mixed up, is that something that can be fixed on my own? I could buy a mouse and keyboard that don't use USB ports to plug in.
-
What port did your old keyboard and mouse use? Were they little round connectors?
-
Both my old keyboard/mouse and my new keyboard/mouse use USB ports, not the little round things.
-
i would avoid using
wireless kb/mouse
i just use wired ones
-
We need to get you a working mouse and keyboard before we worry about the USB drivers. We can help you with them on here.

That's of no use at all. She has a cabled mouse/keyboard.

try the old keyboard and mouse

On the back of your computer do you have a two small round connectors? One would be green and the other purple.

Have you actually read through this thread or are you just chirping up for the sake of it? ::)
-
i know the old one has the keys sticking
but maybe the new one is defective or not compatable

Ok let me give you the quick re-read version. She has 2 sets of KB/mouse both are USB. NEITHER set are working. TA DA!!

Okay, what happens if you unplug the mouse and keyboard and try to start the computer?

I have thoroughly checked the computer and I do not have two round colored things. There are only two input places that I have never used, and don't currently have anything to plug into them. They are on the back of my computer. They kind of look like little rectangles (a bit thicker than the USB ports) and on one of the ends, there is a triangle. Could this be for a different type of mouse and keyboard?
-
thats a phone line or ethernet cocnnection

No. Try turning the computer on without the mouse and keyboard connected. Tell us what happens.

I have tried unplugging the mouse and the keyboard from the the computer, restarting it, and then plugging things back in, and it still does not work. I have also tried unplugging the mouse and keyboard from the computer, turning it off, unplugging it for a few minutes, then plugging it back in and booting it up and then plugging the mouse/keyboard back in and it doesn't work.
-
What I want you to try is starting the computer without the keyboard and mouse connected at all.
-
Ok, I have just done that again.
-
What happens when you start the computer without the mouse and keyboard connected?
Does it post, does it make it to the login screen?
Do you get an error?
-
considering its not ps/2 rather its USB
it should POST fine
but give it a try

Hello,
Thank you to everyone who helped me out. Yesterday evening I was using my roommate's computer and borrowing wireless from our neighbor, and the Internet became suddenly unavailable. I wanted to touch base and let you know what was wrong.
The computer had a virus which was block the drivers. I had my hard drive wiped and reinstalled everything and now the computer is working perfectly.
Thanks again for all of the help!

Glad to here you sorted it out ;)
Come back any time.
