Title: how far can an internet connection go?
Post by: missrenee on September 20, 2009, 06:44:48 PM
i'm moving from home and i only live about a mile and a half from my parents' house now.  instead of setting up a new, expensive internet account, is there a card or device i can buy that will help me continue to read my parents' internet connection?  i have a wireless router of my own and i'm wireless in their house.  is there something i can do or will i need to set up a whole new internet connection?

thanx in advance!

For Commercial users there are devices that extend the wireless range. But they cost a lot and require special installation. So you don't save money.

No, you're not going to be able to "reach" or "find" your parent's signal (but you might be able to meet your neighbors).  It's too far away and there are too many other networks using the same "channel" between you and your parents.

Some interesting reading:  Jeff Duntemann's Wardriving FAQ (http://faq.wardrive.net/).  Please note, it's dated "April 26, 2003"; laws change.

I just read that FAQ and saw WARDIALING. I think I accidentally dialed someone's modem lol.

You cannot. You will need to set up a expensive internet connection or you can use a free basic dial up connection which I will try today if it is stable at http://www.dialupforfree.com/gettingstarted.html or http://www.metconnect.com/ if you don't want to pay.

I don't know what happened. I mis-dialed a number and it sounded like my mom's modem (I think) on her old computer.

Edit: and now when I try to redial, it just disconnects (like pressing ignore call on a cell phone).

Expensive? Most DSL providers offer a service for $25. It's a basic package, and not 6.0 MBPS speeds, but it's not expensive.

Aparently the number I dialed could have been a fax machine.

Budget Dial up is that way to go if you want very low price service you seldom use. You would use it on you vacation. They do not charge by the month.

DSLExtreme is also very good, if they are in your local area.
