Title: October monthly poll
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on October 01, 2009, 04:29:25 AM
For the month of October we thought it would be interesting to see how many users are planing on upgrading to Windows 7 that is being released October 22, 2009. Feel free to make any comments about why you are or are not upgrading, what version you're planning on running, and other feelings you have about this release of Windows.

All past monthly polls and results can also be found on the Computer Hope poll page (http://www.computerhope.com/polls.htm).

I've seen the prices and it's just to high according to me to upgrade now... I'll wait until march, then my RC version starts to shut down every 2 hours... so then I'll buy a legal version.

Also my laptop runs Win7 and I'm testing Linux Ubuntu at the moment on a virtual machine.. so I might go to that.

Wondering what others will do :)

Waiting for MS to send my copy with the next action pack, then I'll install as a dual boot on my primary home system. I really have too many apps installed to do a clean install, but eventually I may see how things work with a Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate upgrade (with a backup image, of course). I would never recommend an OS in-place upgrade to anyone, but I may give it a shot at some point.

Yes, Ubuntu Linux is very good. I tested on a virtual machine and on a live CD for a few months and It is now my primary OS.

I voted "Yes - but waiting". I would get it right now but none of my PC's will run it very well if they could run it at all. I'll get Win7 with my next hardware upgrade. But after being a beta tester I think is definitely the best version of Windows.

I did a clean reinstall of XP on both my laptop and desktop this spring and both are running very nicely.  I may upgrade to windows 7 in the future but I'm in no hurry since I have no problems with XP and I see no need to get the latest and greatest "just because."

I was invited to a special Microsoft event, where they handed out free copies to everyone that attended.

The "Microsoft: The New Efficiency Technical Briefing." It was an all day thing where they talked about new features, roll out and deployment plans, along with Server 2008 R2 details.
IT was pretty fun! AND I got Ultimate as a gift along with a shirt! And a notepad!

Personally, Win 7 sounds quite wonderful but so far, XP is working just fine.

Wait till the price drops/(bugs removed)  ;)
Unless you do have that free offer to upgrade.

One suggestion for you as well: use appropriate text formatting.
Additionally how is such a recommendation relevant? Windows 98 is really nothing like windows 7, so of course the implication is that all americans are retarded when it comes to using PCs, which is simply not true. In fact, if people have trouble with an operating system, the operating system vendor often blames themselves, and rightly so- their User interface is designed to make the PC easier to use and intuitive.

My version of Windos 7 RC calles itseld 'Ultimate"...
but it seems to be lacking something.
I have it installed on two machines. This machine is my Dell 280 SFF.
Can't log onto Internet on this machine...The wireless card is not very compatible. So I bought a new card that is Windows 7 certified. Should be here in a few days.

If it was me I would upgrade a soon as I could. It is a really good OS, the beta was actually more stable then Vista when it was first released. It has a lot of new features too. I'd say go for it. :)

No bugs so far in Windows 7. Been running the beta for 6 months and recently got a free copy of Microsoft 7 for hosting a Microsoft Intro Party. Much better than Vista!

I voted "Not sure yet". I'm not an early adopter so I'll wait. The first version of anything always has a few bugs in it and I'm pretty happy with XP right now. As an aside, how did they (Microsoft) decide this would be Windows 7 and not something like Windows 12  ???

It is their 7th major OS. This is what i was told:

Windows 95 was the 1st
Windows 98 was the 2nd
Windows 2000 was the 3rd
Windows ME was the 4th
Windows XP was the 5th
Vista was the 6th
And Win7 is the 7th of course.
Title: Re: October monthly poll

version numbers for those Windows OS's whose versions are not in the name:

Windows 95: 4.00.1111

Windows 98: 4.10.1998
Windows 98 SE: 4.10.2222
Windows ME: 4.90.3000
Windows 2000: 5.0.2195 (the "build number" is different for the different SPs... this one is SP4)
Windows XP: 5.1.xxxx (same as above... also merges business (NT) with consumer(9x) lineage)
Windows Vista: 6.0.6002 (Revision different for the SPs, same as above)
Windows 7: 6.1.xxxx (again... SPs...)

Windows 7 is Version 6.1, but that isn't as catchy as just 7.

There is no technical reason it's called Windows 7. It's purely marketing. Same reason they moved away from calling the OS by their version numbers to begin with- marketing. (Which would sound better in 95, "WINDOWS VERSION 4.00.1111" or "Windows 95"?)

It's purely a marketing thing.

It seems to me that every time Microsoft introduce a new OS, it's even more resource hungry than the last.
So given that XP is working just fine, why would I need to even consider "upgrading" to Win7?
I suspect I'd find about a hundred processes running and my pc would grind to a halt!

I'll wait until I've got a machine that's designed and built with Win7 in mind thanks...

You'd be amazed how smooth Windows 7 runs on a computer designed for Windows 2000. It's absolutely incredible - MUCH better (and less hardware-hungry) than Vista.

I know someone with a PC bought just after Vista came out although his came with XP Media Centre SP3. His specs are below. Would XP or Vista run faster on his PC? Would the speed difference be very much?

-----------------------------------------------
Intel Pentium 4 CPU @ 3ghz (he says dual-core but I'm not too sure about that)
2 GB DDR2 RAM
750GB total HDD space
ATI 512 MB Integrated graphics
+ USB, Sound, Ethernet & the rest

I'm mainly wondering how the speed would be on his computer when comparing XP and 7.

I've just never understood where all this Vista bashing comes from. I have it running on most of my systems and other than boot time (which varies from system to system) it performs every bit as "fast" (whatever that means) as XP ever did (and does on my other systems).
Title: Re: October monthly poll
Post by: BC_Programmer on October 19, 2009, 05:17:38 PM
I think it might be coming from people who upgraded from a XP-designed PC, perhaps low-end, with integrated graphics. Not something necessarily good for running Vista.

In fact I've seen people try to upgrade XP, on a PC that they had upgraded from windows 98SE. Of course they blame the OS for their troubles, even though the PC is a decade old.

I don't believe there was any "optimization" of the OS between Windows Vista and Seven anymore then there was specific catering to run fewer services and programs by default then Vista, once MS realized that people still expect decade old machines to run a new OS.

Well to get the best of both worlds (Expandability of of PC but with no Windows) you could get a PC and run the Linux OS on it. I recommend Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu). The Linux OS (sometime called GNU/Linux) is a entirely free (and really good) OS with most programs for it also being free.

I recommend at least giving it a go. :)

Got my copy of Win 7 Home Premium on Tuesday, took about 30 minutes to do a clean install (from XP) and I'm loving it!!!!!!!! (http://www.truckblog.com/forums/images/emoticons/approval/thumbup1.gif)

well i have already bought a new computer for my old man as a joint birthday and Christmas present, and it has Windows 7 on it.  My first impressions are that its very good, alot better then Vista both in speed and presentation wise.  However i am going to wait before upgrading my Windows XP main PC as am going to be upgrading the components in the New Year, and will be waiting as don't think its worth it on my Vista laptop as i don't use it alot.

Well, I can't answer that because I've got 64 bit with 6 GB of RAM. ;D

I am not shour how much vista took up but i have had my computer on for 3 days now (games, internet, but mostly folding) and it is taking ~1.4 Gb of my 4 Gigs. I have an update so I will restart my pc and let you know how much it is using on a fresh start.

(Update) I takes ~900Mb on start up. I also noticed that my original post was my 200th. I wonder if it will count the update as a new one.
