Title: Assigning Static IP address

Hi,

I want to assign a static IP address to my computers on my home network.

I noticed that in the settings of my router there is a "DHCP" option which allows it to give certain MAC addresses a certain IP. However I also know that there is an option in Windows (I use XP and Vista) where I fill in the IP address, subnet and default gateway and also the DNS numbers.

So do I use the one on the router or the one in windows to assign static IP? Is there a difference?

I have tried using the router one but it works on some computer but not others. I have set my window's settings all to auto detect. So why doesn't it always work?
