It depends.
If you upgrade from Vista, your files should be fine.
If you go for clean install (always recommended), everything will be gone.

I recommend you backup your harddrive and do a clean install.

To be clear about what gets deleted, a clean installation will erase the partition that is selected for the OS. Any other partitions [recovery, data, etc.] should be OK unless they are specifically selected to be deleted during installation.
Of course, many hard drives have only one partition.
Backup anything you want to keep.

I agree with the previous couple of posts.

You should ALWAYS back up anything that is important, especially when you start installing a new OS.

Yes.
In VISTA you can move the partition size to create enough free space for Windows 7.
Next boot from Windows 7 DVD and do a a new install in the free space.

huh?  Ok cuz my computer caught a virus, so it doesnt even boot up.  It says some stuff about a deleted registry file when i try to boot it up.  So yeah

So how would i install windows 7 without losing my data?  I create another partition?

You could possibly repair the vista installation. Why do you want to install 7?

Yeah i dont have a CD of Vista right, so i figured i might as well put 7 on it.  cuz i hear that 7 runs much more smoothly than vista and doesnt have a *censored* load of bugs and problems like vista.

Well in order to save your data you would have to slave your hard drive in another computer and copy all of the files to a flash drive or CDs.

How far do you get in the Vista boot process before it stops?

Post by: Llamanator on November 02, 2009, 08:17:11 PM
i get to the part where after it asks me if i want to boot Vista in safe mode, or last know configuration, or run it normally.  I tried all of the options, but everytime after that is says the same thing about missing a registry file.

Like really, the only thing that I really wanna back up is my music cuz it takes forever to find all 3000 of my songs again.

yeeeeaah...... Is it possible to fix Vista without deleting my hard drive?

The problem literally states:

"File: \windows\system32\config\system

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt."

hoooooow?????   :'(

Do like Patio says.  :)
Before doing anything more, save your data.

yeeeeaah...... Is it possible to fix Vista without deleting my hard drive?

Maybe...

Try this:
Download the Vista recovery disk here:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Then download imgburn from here:
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Use imgburn to burn the ISO to a disk. If you need help with this, look here:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn

Now you will need to boot to the disk. If you don't know how to boot to a disk, post back and we will help you with that.

Once you have booted to the disk choose startup repair from the main menu and let it do it's thing. If that doesn't work choose System Restore. If neither of those work, post back and we will do some more troubleshooting.

Hey.

Ok i tried using the recovery disk and booting from CD.  I got another error on my PC while i tried to do that :(
This popped up after i pushed a key to boot from CD

"Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occured"

Above the error message, it starts talking about all how i might have faulty hardware.
I used the recovery disk on my laptop, and it loaded successfully, so the disk is not the problem.  I then tried running Windows 7 installation on my PC, and it loaded correctly too.  So....... THE MESSAGE IS A LIE!!!! :o

got any ideas ?_?

No...
The message is not a lie....most likely a sign of an impending HDD failure.
DLoad the drive diagnostics from the manuf. site...follow the info on creating a bootable CD and run the long test...

OMGOMGOMG  i did the DOS Seagate tools thingy, and boot from disk.  Whenever i do a long test it crashes.  but i can do a short test, and apparantly the hard drive passed the test.  Again, ive never done a long test before because my computer crashes mid-test.  Annoying.

This was to be a quick question.
So far you have received.
1. How to install Windows 7,
2. How to reside your drive,
3. How to deal with a Virus,
4. How to make a recovery disk and
5. Identify a pending hardware failure.

You should press the Thank button for each one that gave  help.
And maybe the will invite you end-of-year party coming up.

Replace the HDD...

The more you try to use it the further away you get from saving any of your data...

The upgrade install doesn't delete files- or- it tries not to delete files.

Upgrading from an infected OS will either fail or you'll simply end up with another infected OS (a newer one, but infected nonetheless).

If I was in your situation I would do a clean install- and in fact that was what everybody was assuming you wished to do, because upgrading would also bring along any infections from the previous OS install. In that case, all your data woulde be gone. therefore a backup would be in order.

Incorrect.
Win7 does create a Windows .old folder that alledgedly saves your data and settings but it has proved to be flakey at best for restoring that data...
If you need documentation there's about a gazillion hits on google for this...

No one here lied to you as Win7 does in fact wipe the partition and do a clean install...and i'm a bit put off by hearing we are liars.

But carry on...

PS Congrats on making my ignore list.

i did thank you.... xD

Hi guys, just one last question before this string of posts stops.
Im trying to install my ethernet driver on my desktop, but for some reason the driver has no .exe to launch anything.

The files are:

netrtx64.cat
netrtx64.inf
rt64win7.sys
RtNicprop64.DLL

So yeah how do i get the driver going?

Title: Re: Quick question

Sorry about that, I didn't mean to be vague, NIC=Network Interface Card.
Title: Re: Quick question

ummmm.... my network card is intergrated on my motherboard.
Which is a K9A2 Platinum motherboard.

So did you save the data on your hard disk and replace it?

Without doing that the NIC is the least of your worries.

Yeah i got my computer going just no internet ._.

Do you have a disk from the computer manufacturer?

It will have the NIC drivers on it, usually listed under the chipset drivers.  Install those, that should help.  Let us know if it doesn't or what you don't understand.
