Title: What files are needed in my iosubsys file
Post by: cruisin702 on November 29, 2009, 05:31:35 PM
I have a Dell 8100 computer running Windows ME . Here is what happened. I bought a new comp a few monrths ago. Now it is tax time and I needed files off of my old comp so I bought an external WD drive to transfer my old files. Ok, now here is where the problem started. The drive wouldn't work so I found information somewhere on getting moving files from the options cabs folder to the windows\system\iosubsys folder. When moving the files I figure hey why not just move all of these files there. I now realize that was a HUGE mistake! now through ms dos I deleted all of the files in the iosubsys folder by mistake. Now I get the I/O subsytem driver failed to load error. So what files do i need to put back there?Microsoft says they should be in the options\install folder which i have, but which files do i need to copy to the iosubsys folder?

Sorry I can not help you.

One thing. If you ever have the chance to teach compute ring to others, tell them the first rule is to never move files, we copy files.
The move command is only for the spacial case where you know for sure what is going to happen and you will live with the consequences.

There is an option to undo a move, but it may be too late now.

There is a way to remove the HDD from the case and have the data read by another computer.

Here are some video tutorials...

I was able to solve my problem by moving \WINDOWS to \OLDWIN and reinstalling windows in \WINDOWS which got my windows and programs back operational without most of my graphics drivers etc.. so I copied my new iosubsys files to the \OLDWIN and then moved \WINDOWS to \NEWWIN and moved \OLDWIN back to \WINDOWS. Eerything went back to where I was 3 days ago after that. There is one problem I now have. When I click on "My Computer" and then "Local Disk" nothing shows in the explorer window just says 60 objects at the bottom. Everything is there I just cant navigate to it unless I know where it is located and type it in. Any suggestions on what to do to get this back operational. After I get so far typing my address in , example C:\windows\desktop everything shows up but C:\windows shows nothing. Thanks

You can use a browser to navigate the file system.

File > Oren > C:

Like this:

You can use Internet Explorer as a surrogate for the Windows Explorer.

Can't let you see. Has secret tools and gadgets.
Here is just one, My clip-on lens that lets me find hidden objects.

I've tried using the browser, That doesn't work either. It works after I get so far into the location of my files as described above for example if i type C:\windows\desktop and hit enter my desktop folder opens up but if I type C:\windows\ or just C:\ and hit enter it is blank.

Restricted folders. I don't know how to change this in Windows ME.

Or, how do you repair Windows ME? Does it have a S F C ?

Anybody?

Maybe I just need to invest in a pair of those 007 clip on lenses to see the folders  ;D

Doing a install of Windows ME will wipe out most or all of your stuff. This article has some specific tips on how to backup vital stuff in ME before your re install

I already did the reinstall as described above. Everything is still there. I have been able to back up almost everything onto my external usb storage. I say "almost" because i cannot navigate my hard drive properly to look at all of my folders. I have searched for images and documents and found everything that I know of that I dont want to lose. I just want to be able to navigate my drive to find anything that I may have missed before I do a complete reformat and reinstall.

When that happens to me, I do a new install on another HDD. Make the new HDD the boot. Then the new install should see all the folders on he old HDD after you do the option to show everything.
After that, migrate important stuff to the new drive. Do not format the old drive. Keep it around until you are sure there is nothing on it you need. That might take a year. But for the present cost of a spare HDD it is good insurance.

heh, that's what I do. I Still have a working 50MB boot drive from my 386. Hey, you never know when I might need something off it.

I have at least 5 or 6 copies of most of my important stuff on various hard drives, at various stages of development, too. But that's simply a side effect of that nervous feeling I get when I go to format one "Is there anything I missed?".

Of course being that I copy the entire contents I can't see how I would miss something... but the feeling persists nonetheless.
