I have a desk top Windoows XP service pack 3.
Custom built 1 year ago, Asrock G31M-S +iCH7 chipsets motherboard
Realtek HD Audio, [this icon in control panel does not open. ]
A scan said the audio driver out of date. Realtek advised downloading drivers from Asrock which I did and saved in documents
Now for the hard bit How do I place it where it should be, at the moment I am getting the message
Cannot play this file it may not support this file type or the codec used to compress this file
I've been here so long I am having all meals served to me here
If any one can point where to go next I would be grateful >:(

I'm sorry, let me make sure I understand. You downloaded a driver and then saved it without installing it? Is that correct? If so, you need to install it. What is the name of the driver file?

Went direct to Realtek who won't upgrade for free but they advise that I download from the motherboard manufacturers, 'Asrock', there I found the only driver listed for this computer that matched the details on the mother board box, downloaded and saved to documents , direct install didn't seem to be an option as it was either run or save, also cannot play this file, it may not support this type or codec used to compress the file'' message made me unsure if I have the correct driver

I am seriously thinking of paying someone like Driver Detectives to set it all up for me although I gather there would be no gaurantee that it will work

Download System Information for Windows: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html to your Desktop.
Get SIW Standalone (English-Only).
Double click on siw.exe to run the program.
Go File>Create Report File>HTML
Save the file to known location.
Zip the file, and attach it to your next reply.

I got as far saving siw and saved it all in 1 file but it was still too large to post here.
I have tried to down load drivers to-day and now receive code 31 and error 39. my confidence has been knocked a bit
Thank you all for trying to help but I feel that my computer expertise is too poor to put this problem right and as lack of sound won't bother me too much I am calling it a day, thank you all for your time

IF ALL FAILS TRY THIS.
I am no computer-guru but I do have a tip.
Install DriverGuide toolkit(From their site),it is free !!!
Run it and let IT install your missing\faulty drivers.
Wish you all the best, and as said KEEP AT IT !!!
Good luck;Eric...
PS:The best thing is to download from the manufacturer, that is why I said;If all fails.

Yes the program says that i'm outdated but it doesn't fix the problem 'FREE' cuz i have to get membership just to get a driver .... :(

Programs like that are nothing but a scam...
1. Drivers shouldn't be touched, unless there is something wrong with them.
2. All drivers can be obtained for free from manufacturer site
