Title: Windows 95 problems.
Post by: Tom Beers on June 30, 2005, 03:08:51 PM
Hi, I have some problems with my copy of windows 95, when I load it up it doesn't load and goes to the C:\> command prompt and when I put my boot disk in it told me the the errors are:

cd1.sys is either corrupt or missing.
Their is an error with config.sys.
Device driver 'BANANA' not found.

I have had trouble with these files before, but that was sorted out, so I think they must just have been moved, so please can you tell me where they will most probably have gone and where they should be, thank you.

arh the famous boot disk......ok  hear is what i would do load it  at the A:\>  (type this after it)* sys  c:           a message should appear files transfered*.......now load the win95 disk........some firms are still using 95 :)

so its A:\> sys  c:         remember the space between sys and the c..................ok.......

I think BANANA is DOS driver for CDROM.  Ignore it.

Alright, it turns out cd1.sys is still missing and config.sys has an error on line 5 (I hate win95...), line reads:

STACKS=0,0

Hope you lot know what to do :).

more info>http://www.geocities.com/~budallen/setup.html#Unable%20To%20Install

all this hassle all because of the cdrom driver?

I know about that 'BANANA' thing now, I don't have a cd-rom drive so thats why, and thanks for that link to the config.sys layout, I don't suppose you know what the cd1.sys layout should look like do you?

Alright, thanks all of that seems to be fixed, yet it still doesn't load and goes straight to the command prompt, here is exactly what it say:

No drives found, aborting installation

Warning: the high memory area (HMA) is not available.
Aditional low memory (640K) will be used instead.

C:\>mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi

Code page operation not supported on this device

C:\>mode con codepage select=850
Device error during select

C:\>keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys

C:\>
C:\>SET PATH=C:\PROGRA~1\RELEC~1;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND

C:\>
C:\>SET PATH=C:\PROGRA~1\REFLEC~1;C:\PROGRA~1\REFLEC~1;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND

C:\>

C:\>

All that doesn't seem very important to me, can you see anything wrong with it?

I have been messing around with it for a while now, and the only problem, is that device driver, is there anyway I can download it, fix it or disable it, also is their any way of getting into the bios while my pc is in this state?

bios.......del/ctrl key on boot.......depends on the make....but you need the cdrom drivers......and you need to format the drive and fdisk it........

have  a read>>>>http://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm#5

try this......load the boot floppy at the a:\> type format C:                     its should display a message all files will be lost..when the finishes take the disk out in case it wants to re-boot.. stick the disk back in and now...type fdisk after the prompt..when you have done that now use this one A:|> SYS  C:.....see how you get on.....

I suppose that could have sounded like I was installing it, but I'm not, and like I said, I don't have the win95 disk and it now just wont load (typical windows 95...), the only error being the 'BANANA' one, now if you could help me fix that I would be grateful.

Nah that didn't work... I give up, there is no problem yet it still won't work, I think I'll buy a win95 off eBay and re-install it, thanks for your help though.

Thanks, but I prefer the object-orientated OSs.

Also, because that is old and would be considered 'antique software', I expect it would be more expensive than win95.
