Is there still a free antivirus out there for windows 98 and where can I get it?

Avast 4.8 should work: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/tech/6635/

Unfortunately, much of the information is wrong and/or outdated:
Here is the list of security tools that supports Windows 98 and Windows ME:
Anti Virus Software
Freeware: Antivir Personal Edition Classic, Avast 4 Home Edition, Grisoft’s AVG Personal Edition, Bitdefender 8, Free Edition, ClamWin Free.
AntiVir and AVG are two I know for sure that do not support Win98.
-
Avira doesn't support 98 anymore. Same goes for AVG.
I'm not aware of BitDefender free.
ClamWin doesn't work in real time.
-
AVG does...

Yes as Broni says you can use Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1368 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/) its that last version that will run on all Windows versions. I use it on my WinME, WinXP and Vista machines an its free. I actuall use Avast 5 on my WinXP and Vista machines but 4.8 ran on them perfectly, I only changed to 5.0 last week. ;)

I am using Solo antivirus 2011 version and it is effectively working with my Windows 98 system. You can download and try Solo from They are providing frequent signature updates too.

I too have been lookind for a free AV for Win98 with no success, yet. Although many advertise that they are 98 compatible, once downloaded a message appears saying that a newer version of Win was expected. As Broni says (and I'm sure he's right), Avast 4.8 would probably work if it could be found. Unfortunately once at the site( from what I can see) they only offer a newer version that is not compatible with 98. The only AV that I could find to work(and it's mentioned in this thread) is Solo, and it's not free. I hope someone can correct me (free AV for Win98), but until then I'll keep looking. overthehill

Thanks once again, C_C. Possibly I could have done a little better (I did try a few versions that weren't compatible) so I ended up going to the bottom of the heap. v 6.31.00.03. At least this one is running and it's free. I don't plan on using this "Old Dell" on line once I get a few things straightened anyway, so hopefully this will be sufficient.
Thks. again. overthehill

This one works on my Win98SE: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/
Last time I booted, it auto-updated. Don't know how long that will last.
I did have to register to get a free license key.

Well once again C_C I have to thank you, (and I did, ;)). I followed your lead and it is exactly as you stated.
I downloaded , updated and registered this AV.
I'm particularly pleased with the fact that the AV is Avast. I use Avast on my main PC and so far I have found it to be absolutely,if not the best, one of the best free(or otherwise) AV's available. And yes, how long the updates will last (this version),is anyones guess? But to have an AV version for which they are still forwarding updates(Win98 in this day and age), is quite amazing to me and very much appreciated. Again, thanks for this. overthehill

Sorry Broni, I just couldn't get it to work :( . Not that I doubted you for a minute but I just couldn't get it to work. After more info.(than I probably deserved) from C_C , it finally all came together. overthehill

Avira is a good antivirus for windows 98. It is a lightweight antivirus that is appropriate to your operating system. You can search in the internet for the download link.
