    getting online
    « on: February 14, 2010, 06:53:09 PM »
cant seem to figure this out for the life of me. I build my own computers. My latest is an msi mb. The problem that i am having is: I just installed fresh xp pro w/sp3 os. installed all needed drivers. network says i am connected to the net, but no pages will open. I changed all my settings, so I am accepting all cookies. There is no av or antispyware software yet, and i have windows security disabled, so there is no firewall. I tried repairing the connections, and resetting everythin g thru dos. I dunno where else to turn> The network is a gigabyte ethernet that is on board.

Missing SM Bus Controller driver indicates, that a chipset driver is not installed, or wrong driver was installed.

Download System Information for Windows: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html to your Desktop.
        Get SIW Standalone (English-Only).
Double click on siw.exe to run the program.
        Go File>Create Report File>HTML
Save the file to known location.
Zip the file, and attach it to your next reply.

It looks like chipset driver got installed correctly, since there is no SM Bus driver missing anymore.
To possibly solve that 3rd (unknown device) error, download and install this: http://download.cnet.com/ATK0110-ACPI-UTILITY/3000-2110_4-207822.html

                1.  ISP Connection.
                      a.  Is it dial-up, DSL, cable, satellite, Wireless Mobile?
                      b.  Is the computer behind a "home router" (or directly connected to your ISP connection)?
                      c.  Does another computer successfully open Internet websites using the same physical network path?

The problem that i am having is: I just installed fresh xp pro w/sp3 os. installed all needed drivers. network says i am connected to the net, but no pages will open.
                2.  Ping.  Maybe I'm missing something.  Verify your connection status to and through the Internet using "ping" from a Command Prompt window...
                     a.  "ping 127.0.0.1"                           ; access TCP/IP loopback address
                     b.  "ping <your_own_IP_address>"       ; access your NIC card
                     c.  "ping <your_gateway_IP_address>" ; access your home router
                     d.  "ping 69.72.169.241"                    ; access www.computerhope.com
                     e.  "ping 139.151.188.4"                    ; access www.yosemite.com

Note:  Use "ipconfig /all" from a Command Prompt window to access your current TCP/IP configuration values.

If you can successfully ping up to your home router [the Local Area Network (LAN) gateway IP address - step "c: above] but not beyond; then login to the configuration pages of your home router to get TCP/IP configuration assigned to the router's Wide Area Network (WAN/Internet) interface by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Look for and record (but do not post) these values:
                     o  IP Address
                     o  Subnet Mask
                     o  Default Gateway
                     o  DNS Server Address (Primary)
                     o  DNS Server Address (Secondary)

                then
                     d.  "ping <your_WAN/Internet_IP_address>"   ; assigned by ISP
                     e.  "ping <your_WAN/Internet_IP_gateway>"  ; assigned by ISP
                     f.  "ping <your_DNS_Server_IP_Address>"      ; assigned by ISP

                3.  Internet Browser.  If you can successfully "ping" the websites referenced above, try opening them from a browser using the following addresses (without the quotes):
                     a.  "http://69.72.169.241"
                     b.  "http://139.151.188.4"

i got 2 of the three to disappear. the third is my M-Audio card in the pci slot which i havent downloaded the latest drivers for yet.
The unknown is an issue known with asus motherboards. i found the files on their forum to fix that.
I have cable internet and am running thru a rca cable modem/router. There are 4 other pc's hooked into it (1 wirelessly and 3 through ethernet)
I tried to ping numerous sites and they all varied from 25%fail to 100% fail.
I am wired into the router through ethernet and i also installed a netgear card and tried wirelessly. My computer says it is connected at 100gbs but no pages will open, nore will any updates or p2p work.
all of the other computers are working fine and have no internet problems

                    1.  Your response indicates you don't have a reliable connection to...  Well I don't know "where" because you don't say.  Since you don't appear to have a good link, please provide details about your observations and responses.  For example:
                         a.  "ping 127.0.0.1"
                               (1)  IP address from Reply
                               (2)  Percent packet loss
                               (3)  Average "round trip time" in milli-seconds
                               (4)  Any error/info message received in place of a reply

Based on your response, I can only suggest you retest with "known" good working ethernet cable and port on your home router.

                    2.  You need to communicate reliably through your NIC (without significant packet loss) before you can even dream about getting on the internet.  Test how far you can get toward the internet before your communications start to break down.

                    3.  Let's scale back the effort...  Can the computer communicate reliably with your local area network's gateway (home router)?

Retest with the following commands (without the quotes and replace "<>" with the requested information):
                         a.  "ping -n 20 127.0.0.1"
                         b.  "ping -n 20 <your_computer's_IP_address>"
                         c.  "ping -n 20 <your_local_gateway_address>"

My computer says it is connected at 100gbs but no pages will open, nore will any updates or p2p work.
                    4.  Probably 100 Mbps.  "No pages will open" from a browser?  What reason does it give (error/info message)?
