Local Area Network unplugged but its not
    « on: February 14, 2010, 09:13:33 PM »
I need some help. I am pulling my hair out.
my internet connection says it is unplugged and it isn't.  I have checked the wires and they work fine on another computer.  I have three other computers hooked to the same router and they all work fine.  I have checked the drivers for the network adapter in device manager and all works properly.  On my computer it is a built in nic card to the mobo even so I went outand bought a new nic card just to try it and it is doing the samething. I uninstalled and rolled back the drivers and i get nothing.  It all started with an error message saything that explorer had to close it gave me 30 seconds and automatically restarted the computer and when it reset the network was unplugged so I think it is a software problem just can't figure it out.
I have windows Xp service pack 3

Any help would be greatly appreciated

      1.  What is the "status" of the NIC LEDs (on/off, steady/blinking, green/amber/yellow)?

      2.  Use Command Prompt window.
           a.  Bring up a Command Prompt window.  Run -> Start -> type "cmd" without quotes and hit <Enter> key.

           b.  Check the TCP/IP stack using the IPv4 loopback address.  Does "ping 127.0.0.1" complete successfully?

           c.  Check your own IP address.  Use "ipconfig" to get your address, then "ping <your_address>" (enter your address without the "<>".  What does it say?

              1.  There's lots of stuff in reference "a" below that you could look at.  Beyond that, I don't know...

Did you try the obvious?  Disconnect end of cable from one working computer and connect it to yours.  (So you're using a known good cable in a known good LAN port of router.)

              2.  NIC.  What is the make and model number of the NIC card?

You mentioned you uninstalled and rolled back the drivers. Did you reinstall them?

In device manager, are there any yellow question or exclamation marks?

              Have you done these?
              1. Replace the cable. Not test it, replace it.
              2. Put the NIC in another slot?
              3. Do the whole Network wizard over again?
