updating memory
« on: March 07, 2010, 02:29:20 PM »
I have an older genertic computer that I need to add more memory to.  As a beginner, I have some pretty simple questions before I buy any update.  I will give you an idea of my system and hope that someone will be kind enough to offer advice.  The system has Socket 478 Pentium 4, 2.53 Ghz CPU with 533 Mhz Front Side Bus speed and 512K cache.  In the memory section, it has 1 DIMM of 512
MB DDR PC2100.  The mainboard supports DDR up to 266/333 MHz SDRAM.  It accommodates three unbuffered 2.5V 184-pin slots.  Each slot supports up to 1 GB with a total maximum capacity of 3 GB.  My question is can I change to a PC2700 1 GB memory stick and if so, what do I need to do or change to get the benefit of a 333 Mhz speed?  I would like to get two of the three slots filled with 1 GB each.  For a perhaps inappropriate question, does anyone have a brand recommendation?  Thanks for any and all your help--I have not been able to find a discussion that will allow me to feel comfortable about what to buy.

You can add two PC 2700 1G memory sticks, but the speed will only be PC 2100, if you leave the 512 MB module in the computer.  Your bios will always use the speed of the slowest RAM module.

You could just remove the 512 MB stick and install the other two and you'll have PC 2700 speed. Get it?

As far as brand is concerned, what's the make/model of the motherboard?
I'm not the most familiar person as to what brand is better, but your motherboard manufacturer might recommend as specific brand as per QVL (qualified vendor list)

Ditto on CC's recommendation.  Crucial has a good routine that will analyze what you have got and make recommendations on what you need.

They have fairly good price's and excellent service.  Even if you don't buy from them it's the best place to start.
