No version of Ubuntu will work very well with that config.

You could try DamnSmallLinux or VectorLinux which work better with low spec computers.

And of course you could run slackware and never install a desktop environment.

you can head down to the old archives of redhat and install those versions like 5.2, 5.1 etc

Try this one: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/,  I believe it may be a better choice than Lubuntu.

I suggest you download the .iso file from http://www.icewalkers.com/download/*censored*-Small-Linux/2005/dls/.  Again, it's an .iso file, not an .exe file.  Once downloaded, you burn it to CD or DVD, which creates a bootable CD/DVD from which you can install it.  If you need burning software (not all burning software works well for creating a bootable disk), I recommend ImgBurn

That doesn't make sense.  Here's what you should be getting:

Yes. As I previously suggested, ImgBurn is a good program for buring ISO's.  If you use Nero or some other burning software often used to burn music and data discs, the ISO file may not work right; it may not be bootable.

You will need to get the Linux ports for them.

    http://www.doomworld.com/ports/linux_unix.shtml

ZDoom For Linux is probably your best bet.

Use "DOSemu", it's a DOS emulator for Linux.

Lubuntu would, I highly recommend it. It is much better then Knoppix or *censored* Small Linux.

"The hardware requirements of LXDE are similiar to Windows 98 (Maybe a little bit higher). An old Pentium II CPU is enough." LXDE website

Lubuntu will work with 64 MB RAM but recommends 128. So if your computer runs 98 well, it should run Lubuntu decent.

    Lubuntu Lucid Beta: http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/lubuntu-lucid-beta1.iso
    Lubuntu Karmic Beta: http://download.lxde.org/lubuntu-9.10/lubuntu-9.10_lynxis_b23.iso

It would be key to note that both are Betas (which may contain bugs), but in my experience Betas are still quite usable. They should be as stable as Windows 98. Knoppix and DSL don't have many programs available for them. The choice is up to you but I would choose the Lubuntu Lucid Beta. I might actually dig out my old 350 Mhz, 256 MB ram machine and try Lubuntu.

I just talked with some Lubuntu people and they confirmed with me it worked decent on their machine (266 Mhz CPU, 128 RAM) that has lower specs than yours. They also told that for them the Lucid beta was rock solid.

It's software that still is being tested (or part of it is being tested).
    Full definition: http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/b/beta.htm

Just go for this, http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/lubuntu-lucid-beta1.iso, it really dosen't matter if it is beta or not.
