un-Smiley Central & the MyWebSearch Toolbar (Virus)
    « on: April 11, 2010, 04:59:33 PM »
There's a company called Smiley Central and I think they have the best smilies, and they're free, but originally you had the option of getting the MyWebSearch toolbar or not and I always refused it.  Then one day I needed to re-install Smiley Central and the MyWebSearch toolbar came with it automatically.  You couldn't get your smilies unless you got the toolbar.

One day I found I had a virus called something like MyWebSearch, and I wondered, is that the Smiley Central thing or something else?  Eventually I noticed it was actually called something else and the Symantec people helped me get rid of it.

Now I have RoadRunner and they assured me the CA Antivirus service that comes free with RoadRunner is very secure and I don't need Symantec anymore, so I let my subscription run out and switched to CA a few months ago.

A few days ago I got a pop up from CA antivirus saying I had the MyWebSearch virus.  The number of locations of the virus kept going up, to 138.  Meanwhile, I ran a full scan of my computer and that section of the CA antivirus found 42 locations, of which 38 were quarantined.  I didn't understand why one window said 138 location, another said 42, and why only 38 were quarantined.  I called RoadRunner tech support while this 5 hour scan was in progress and their only suggestion was to wait for the scan to finish and call back in 24 hours if I still had a problem.  They said they might put me through to CA at that time.

24 hours later they said all RoadRunner subscribers were having the problem and CA was still working on a way to resolve the issue.

I had deleted the items in Quarantine because they all seem to have addresses starting with MyWebSearch etc, and only the extentions were different.  But when I got up a pop up saying C:\SystemInformation MyWebSearch was in Quarantine, I started wondering what exactly I had deleted.  The Dll module is no longer available - I thought that was something Symantec used to check your computer.

    1) Was I wrong about what Dll is?
    2) What would have happened if I had deleted a file called SystemInformation if it had the MyWebSearch virus in it?
    3) What else are you supposed to do with items in Quarantine if not deleting them?
    4) Are there two separate things, a legit MyWebSearch toolbar and a virus?
    5) Is there a way to get SmileyCentral smilies without the toolbar (at all, not just hiding it from sight)?
    6) What do you think of CA as an antivirus, etc. provider?

When looking in my Control Panel's Add/Delet Program listings I can't find MyWebSearch or Smiley Central listed, and nothing is happening when I click to view that toolbar.  How else can I find it?
