    Windows 98 build number contradiction
    « on: April 25, 2010, 09:02:00 AM »
    Hi,

I have an old computer with Windows 98 original and ver, dxdiag and getversionex say I have version 4.10.1998, but the System Control Panel applet says I have 4.10.2222 (which I think is for Second Edition; I'm not sure if it's supposed to be 2222 or 2222A). When I have the version displayed on the desktop, it also says 4.10.2222.

Why would different parts of the operating system think I have different versions and is there any way to fix it without reinstalling?

    Thanks

    patio

    Because of updates...
If it runs ...forget about it and move on.

What kind of updates would change the build number?

      Microsoft ones.

Updates do not replace all files. Different diagnostic tools check different things.

      Code: [Select]
To determine the version of Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me that you are running:

         1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
         2. In Control Panel, double-click System.
         3. Click the General tab.
         4. Locate the version number under the System heading and then see the following table:

            Release                    Version                      File dates
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Windows 95 retail, OEM     4.00.950                     7/11/95
            Windows 95 retail SP1      4.00.950A                    7/11/95-12/31/95
            OEM Service Release 2      4.00.1111* (4.00.950B)       8/24/96
            OEM Service Release 2.1    4.03.1212-1214* (4.00.950B)  8/24/96-8/27/97
            OEM Service Release 2.5    4.03.1214* (4.00.950C)       8/24/96-11/18/97

Is there any way to tell which updates I have installed on Windows 98?

qfecheck.exe crashes when I try to run it.

I only have a few files (systray.exe, wmilib.sys, and 1394bus.sys) modified on 23/04/1999 and have a product version of 4.10.2222
