To fix run the following from the command prompt:

copy c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32

After you copy the file, find it in Windows Explorer, click properties and lock it down by giving it a read-only attribute.

Hope this helps. 8)

Before everyone starts to post alternate solutions.. Don't!

I do have a question; Why does this error seem to occur so often? Is it due to damaged system files or is it native to Windows XP?

The only explanation I've gotten so far is a failed installation. But I've yet to see anybody specifically point out which product causes this.

It does seem to be only a XP problem.

When did you encounter it, Sidewinder?

Don't know really. One day I went to use my Xeditor and the message appeared. The fix was easy enough and I really never thought about it much until I joined this forum and discovered it's a lot more common than I thought.

Microsoft must think it's important...they even have a page on how to fix. Trouble is their solution means dragging out the install disks.

I just chalk it up to another one of those XP features you hear so much about. ;D

When I quit posting here several months ago, I never heard of this problem. It must have been introduced with SP2.

The error is not related to MSDOS, since the programs work fine once the file has been fixed.

We should also give people the 'fix' using the GUI for those that have no idea about DOS.

    FED:

Yep, just copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder.  When asked if the autoexec.nt file should be replaced, click Yes.

    FYI:
Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program

I believe bad or pre-WinNT application programming causes this.  I think it is seen mostly on WinXP because that's what most users have.  Win2k and WinNT were mostly business.
