    Laptop will not boot up.
    « on: August 05, 2009, 04:59:48 AM »
I have a Gateway laptop model W730-K8X with AMD 64 mobile athlon processor. It has XP Home operating system. It has been running fine, but now when I power it up it goes to recovery and ask if I want to boot in safe mode or normal. I have tried safe mode and normal, but after the Windows XP screen goes away it flashes a blue screen error message for about 1 second and I haven't been able to pause it the get the message number. It reboots at that time and ask if I want to boot in safe mode or normal.
    Any help please.

      1.  Stop the automatic boot cycle to get the information from the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Tap the F8 function key once or twice a second as you reboot the machine.  (You may need  to use the F-lock key to access the function keys.)  The Windows Advanced Options menu should appear.  Use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter.  Hopefully the machine will stop on the BSOD.

      2.  BSOD.  Record and post the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending software module it might name.  A google search on these text strings or substrings sometimes provides problem resolution.

      3.  What service pack level of Windows XP Home are you operating at, if known?  None, SP1, SP2, SP3?

I disabled automatic restart on system failure and I was able to read the error message, which said I had a corrupt registry file, so I found by gooogling the message that I needed to possibly reload or repair XP.  I booted with my XP cd and picked repair and then after I entered my administrator password I rain a chkdsk /r and that found the problem and repaired it.
        Thanks for the help.
