    BIOS update
    « on: May 20, 2010, 07:49:08 PM »
I'm debating whether or not to update my BIOS. I've been having problems booting up sometimes (The POST screen doesn't even appear) and I thought this update might fix the problem. I have looked at the release notes, and I don't see any mention of my problem, but I do notice that the version number is 5 more than mine. (I have V4 and the current one is V9) I was wondering if this meant that updates 5-8 might have fixed my issue. Basically, do developers come out with updates for every number or do they skip numbers for big releases? I cannot find mention of prior updates.

Don't overthink it - just update the bios.

I have heard that updating the BIOS can brick the system, so that's why I was a little unsure. What do you think the odds of bricking the mobo are?

Can you boot from a floppy?
Can you boot from a CD?
What does the documentation say about recovery of update failure?
Some few mobs are hard wired to always recover with a floppy.

These days it's mostly an old wive's tale. In the old days systems didn't know how to protect themselves from improper bios versions. These days it's all but impossible to install the incorrect version. The only possible problem nowadays is a power failure during the process - and how likely is that? As I said, don't overthink it - just go ahead and flash the bios.
