Windows 2000 recycle bin problem
« on: July 16, 2005, 03:27:39 PM »
I am running Windows 2000.  When I open the recycle bin I can't see any of the items in there.  I have the "delete items permanently instead of recycle bin" check box cleared.  Thanks for your help

He is asking why the contents of the recycle bin are not showing even though files are supposed to be inside.

I do not know if this is valid for Windows as well;

1. Right click on the Recycle Bin
2. Properties
3. Make certain that the files you are removing do not exceed the recycle bins limitations.

"delete items permanently instead of recycle bin" check box cleared.

It's cleared so that the deleted files go into the recycle bin.
Clear as mud, typical windows, push enter to exit, push start to shutdown  :)

    What Fred said.

The only thing that I have in it now is a shortcut that I didn't need.

Where is the recycler folder at?

So there is something in there?
If you delete a file now, does it show in the recycle bin?
Are you running disk cleanup as a scheduled task?
Disk cleanup, along with many 'aftermarket' things will empty your recycle bin.

Yes there is a short cut icon in there and no I haven't run any of the cleaners since I put it in there.

I think it started when I started using a theme...maybe I'll try removing the theme.  I wouldn't think that would affect it though...

"You can also delete items by dragging them into the Recycle Bin. If you press SHIFT while dragging, the item is deleted from your computer without being stored in the Recycle Bin."

          How do you delete files?

Try deleting a file by right clicking on it & selecting delete?

I've just been reading the w2k help files.
Are you just running a single HDD?
"The following items are not stored in the Recycle Bin and cannot be restored:
                  Items deleted from network locations.
Items deleted from removable media (such as 3.5-inch disks).
Items that are larger than the storage capacity of the Recycle Bin."

You mean a single hard drive?  I have 2.  I increased the recycle bin capicity to 20% which is 3.99 GB in this case.

Silly question but have you emptied the recycle bin then tried to delete a file then to see if it lands back in there?

Have you tried deleting from both drives to see if they both don't go to the bin. Make more files! LOL

Deleted files from both drives do not appear int he bin.  Undo delete returns them to their places.

Take a quick read & make sure you have the properties setup properly.

Take a look in C:\RECYCLER and see if you can see them in there.

I can see them now,  Configuring the recycle bin independantly did the trick.  Still don't understand why that happened though.
