Pay attention...

In the case of a laptop it's different...

You beat me to it, Patio.
I was just gonna post that, but, then remembered that some new laptops have the CMOS battery accessible on the bottom of the case, not unlike the RAM.  I don't remember which ones, but it was a surprise to me.  Never could understand why they didn't do that years ago.
The memory module/coin-cell battery cover is #3

Not particularly- laptops still have CMOS batteries.

my old thinkpad has three batteries (well, ideally) a main battery (which exploded) a standby battery (which also exploded) and a CMOS battery, which thankfully has not exploded.

I use exploded with some hyperbole. They just sorta started leaking.

For laptops, most of the password advice is sound, of course, the password may just as easily be a HD password, which would immensely complicate things.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

On most laptops the CMOS battery is not usually easy to get to...
This is by design...to discourage theft and to make it difficult to re-set the machine.

This is also why we don't advise here at CH on how it should be done.
