DESKTOP GREYSCREEN

I'm currently using a HP Pavilion dv3000 with Windows Vista. Everytime i switch on the laptop, it's fine all the way until the desktop. There's just a grey screen with a mouse. The mouse is movable. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt works and so does Task Manager but they are no use for solving the problem. I've tried F8 as well but to no avail. Please help me with this problem.

What happened between the last time the system booted normally and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?
