Opening a MS Visio fille on I.E.
    « on: June 09, 2010, 10:25:00 AM »
    Good Afternoon,

I received an email from MS Outlook containing an attachment which was a .vsd file (Visio). My Problem is this, I am able to preview the file using visio previewer, but when I want to open the file completely using Internet Explorer, the browser opens and has a red X in the corner.

Ive tried using internet options doing numerous troubleshooting using the advanced tabs and security tabs but I still cannot fix this issue.

    can someone assist?

    Thanks
    Leo

      Hi there Leo,

Can you download the file to your desktop?  If so download it and then right click on it, choose open with and select internet explorer.  This will identify internet explorer as the program that will open such a file.

Try that and let us know how you get on please.

        Hi again,

I meant to say that if the above does not work and if you have used it like this in the past then scan the registry.  You'd be looking for any file association errors.

I doubt it's a file association error. If that were the case, IE wouldn't have tried to open the file to begin with.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Even though you can see the file in preview mode in IE, to really open and work with the file you will need the full Visio installation.

I should have added the full Visio software is about $250, but there are some freeware programs.  Some of the freeware programs are somewhat limited, but can do the basics depending on what you need.
