    windows xp pro needs to be tossed

    i decided to install xp pro on my comp and it was a big mistake this thing hangs and freezes won't download updates and stops in the middle and nothing
    at start up its says invalid boot.ini starting in c:\windows when it hangsno message and nothing have to turn off comp and start over download someting forget it. so whats the deal is xp a bad op or just my comp is screwy.

    Neither. It is most likely you who tried to overwrite a previous installation of Windows (XP) without reformatting the Hard Disk Drive and/or partition(s) first.

    The boot.ini file is what XP uses to give you the option of choosing what operating system to start when you have more than one installed.  

    A repair installation should replace the damaged boot.ini file:

      tried to install over 2000 pro it deleted the partions and formated had to restart the comp during the process7 times in order to install xp pro still having problem of it freezing when im downloading something or reading a document or just sitting there doing nothing ran a check on the hard drive got a error message like this.
      c:\windows\system32\catroot\{f750e6c-3-38ee-11d1-85e5-00c04fc295ee}-\0em2.cat .
         what is this?and how do i solve it.

      Is this an upgrade disk? if so what happens....ms  send a file to your pc to update the boot ini file....load this disk and leave it do its thing?

          Windows XP Professional works slow with 128 MB RAM and works ok with 256 MB RAM. Of course, if you have more RAM it is a very good thing. I mean 512 MB, 1 GB or more.
          Tell us your computer configuration.
          When I do a fresh Windows install I create a partition "big" enough for windows (let's say 10-20 GB); I format it (NTFS, but you could choose FAT if you know what the risks are) and then install on it.

            thanks guys for all the help i fied the problem by installing a differant disk . the other on e was found to have been scratched up its working fine now.thanks all of you for the suggestions and help.

                       just to let you know that my comp has 512mbs of ram and a 20gig hard drive so its not lacking in horsepower and space
