Application cannot be excuted. I am in need of a cure!

So I just recently booted my desktop up after a year and half, due to the fact that a fan went out on my laptop. Maintenance of computer was obviously not the priority of who I lent it to. I am in need of some help cleaning up my system. Was only trying to update my anti virus and spy ware sweeper. Every time I try to install AVG I get an error saying the application cannot be executed. Also, when I try to go into properties via My computer, it does the same thing for rundll32.exe. Same thing for add and remove programs through control panel.

I am running under WinXp. I believe it is SP2.
