What internet browser is fastest? I've heard chrome or safari? Is that correct?

Lynx browser and Link2 are some of the fastest Internet Browsers available, but then again they are mostly text based.

I believe the fastest graphic web-browser is actually named 'Fastest Web Browser', created as a project for web performance, but I've never tried it myself.

The latest Opera browser beats Safari in performance.
Chrome uses parellel pipe loading which makes it seem fast.

IE gets loaded down by plugins, java, etc, and is labeled one of the slowest.

Firefox get loaded down by Java, unload the plugin and your notice a performance increase.

You probably won’t notice the difference hugely.

Chrome had major security holes at the time it boosted it was the fastest.

You shouldn't really be just asking "Which one's fastest?", though it's good to look into. Rather, you should ask "Which one do I like most?", “Which has the features I actually need?”, and most importantly "Which one is safest?".

For me, Chrome has probably been the quickest. Although I still opt for Firefox since it's pretty quick for me and I like the add-ons available for it.

But yeah, in terms of pure speed, Chrome is probably just about the quickest (at least for me). I know Safari has a good rep for speed but for me it's always been a bit slow and laggy which is odd.

Browser speed has never been my main concern. I don't think anybody is going to be on their death bed asking "I wish I had used chrome as my main browser instead of firefox". I mean, seriously, the "speed" differences are so negligible to not even bother with. "OMG Chrome gets to pages .0001 seconds faster, I am so using it shift plus eleventy"! is just such a silly argument/reasoning.

What makes the whole debate/argument/question ridiculous is that the speed of browsing depends entirely on the speed of your internet connection, and no browsers "downloading" of files is faster then another because of some supposed super-technique, they all connect using nearly the exact same methods. In which case the question is one of "which browser renders pages faster" Which is a flawed question at best because it doesn't even address the question of correctness. By definition, Lynx is indeed a web browser, but most people would find the lack of kitty cat images and fun javascript effects intimidating.

It's like asking "what is the fastest text editor" It blazes right by the entire purpose of a text editor, which is to provide editing features for text, not to mention bugs/problems. The "fastest text editor" could be a buggy piece of crap, littered with comments like "even though they chose the Delete to EOL line, we delete the entire line they are on, so we don't have to calculate as much" and other nonsense.

In all the recent browser speed tests I've seen, all the browser speeds are pretty much equal now.  I think the only reason this question has come up so frequently is that with IE6 & 7 compared to many other browseers, they were substantially slower.  When you look how the speeds have increased from IE6 comparted to IE7 & and then IE8 you can see that MS has worked on making their browser as fast as the rest.

My contribution to this thread is that if "increased speed" of ANY browser is important to you you need to find a hobby and learn to slow down. It should be more of "which browser do i like the best"  (sometime can be translated to --which do i feel most comfortable with). This is usually based on assessments of a personal nature that have little if anything to do with speed. I am NOT advocating/promoting it's use but of the ones i have used Opera is my current favorite.truenorth

Thing is, what the browser is for; download and interpreting markup and client-side script and drawing the results- are all slow operations. The biggest "browser boost" wouldn't be tweaking and changing the browsers themselves but rather the technology that underlies them. For example, it would be possible to "compile" HTML and script code into a more compact form that is both more quickly downloaded as well as parsed and executed; however, the reason this has not come to pass is that it adds quite a lot of burden to web developers; they would then need to compile their HTML and script code; additionally, the results aren't clear text, so it's hard to see what exactly you are downloading, and therefore it would be easier for malicious sites to target people.

I think google chrome is the fastest browser, at least it is on my computer. Firefox slows down, especially when there's lots of flash on the websites. Opera also used to be a great, fast browser, but I haven't used it for years, so not sure how it compares these days.

I expect the figures are indicative but maybe not exactly accurate, since they get the figures from the user agent string, don't they? I can make Firefox, Seamonkey and Opera browsers pretend to be IE 6, 7 or 8, In fact you can set user agent spoofing on a per-site basis. Also downloaders such as wget, curl, aria2c, and so on. In fact Opera at one time by default disguised itself as IE. They stopped this partly because it artificially lowered their ranking in browser use tables compiled from user agent data.

attempting to introduce a representativeness error is hardly helpful. Just because you can't think of a good reason doesn't mean that nobody else has decided to change their UserAgent string; in fact, it's naive to make the assumption that just because you are unable to think of a reason for it that nobody does it; a quick extension of that logic reveals that in fact everybody in the world uses firefox, for the sole reason that you cannot think of any reason to use any other browser.

Salmon Trout's point is that while  the user is implying their statistics are accurate, they are not. Any number of anomalous errors could be introduced by any number of people spoofing and using a UserAgent string that doesn't match their browser. Taking it on faith that nobody anywhere that visited that page changed their useragent string is wishful thinking. This is, again, completely forgetting about the various Command line programs that ST noted; again, just becaue you don't use them doesn't mean they aren't widely used; wget, curl, aria2c, an so on have to give something as a useragent and they usually go with either IE's useragent or nowaday's Mozillas. Whichever one they choose, they are weighting site statistics in favour of that browser- again, That's Salmon Trout's point here; Curl, Aria2c, and wget are not browsers and assuming that the statistics of a site magically don't include such tools which are otherwise indistinguishable from actual users that are browsing the site is. That's why ST noted that the figures are indicative but not exactly accurate.

I say Google Chrome is the best. I've tried almost all of the rest and I don't know what it is about Chrome, I just like the layout and everything. Internet Explorer 9 has similar layout but I don't think it's as fast as Google Chrome:)

I have been using many different Internet browsers throughout the years and based on my experience one of the fastest ones is Google Chrome. So far didn't have any issues with it in terms of speed. Another one that I would highly suggest mainly because it is very popular one and there are a lot of SEO plugins (if you are Internet Marketer) is Firefox. However, I have been having a lot of issues with it lately in terms of delay and bugs.

Also, if speed is what concerns you the most, under no circumstances use Internet Explorer.

I haven't used IE since I've gotten my mac.  However I use Firefox instead of Safari just because of the security/tracking features I am able to use.  Not sure if it is faster, but Hey... I like my privacy.  Lately I have had the issue of Firefox freezing or occasionally  slow.  I do have chrome, but just haven't used it enough to really know the deep down dirt on it.

Are you using windows XP? Google Chrome won't install on Windows 2000 unless you do some registry patching which is probably not something you want to do anyway.

And it worked on more operating systems! I mean, firefox works on Linux, windows, and mac; but netscape worked on Linux, windows, mac, as well as windows 3.1. Obviously it's the best choice.

But seriously; for all intents and purposes, the browser war is over. It was Netscape versus IE. IE won by a large margin since netscape sorta dissolved and had to be reborn as an OSS project.    Asking "which browser should I use/is the best" is akin to how women will often ask their boyfriends/husbands wether they should wear, say, the red dress or the blue dress. It doesn't make a difference which one you wear, it'll still take the same amount of time to get to your destination. A common metaphor is that the browser is that the browser is a vehicle that moves us through the web; some browsers are corvettes and others are pinto's and so forth, but this isn't the case. No matter what browser you are using, you're riding in the same car, just wearing a different dress.

I can't be a***d to read all of the previous posts in this rather silly thread, but surely - surely - these days, unless you have an antique or under specified computer, html is going to get rendered in much less time than the user can notice, so that the governing factor in a user's web browsing experience is going to be the connection speed. If a person is wondering about "fastest browsers" they are barking up the wrong tree, especially if they are on dialup.
