    « on: September 22, 2010, 09:56:00 AM »
I have been given a really old pc, its got windows 95 on it. Not really sure it even works properly but i thought i'd have a play. The windows 95 screen logo pops up for a second and then its asking me type sommat at C:\ I cant remember wot to put in. I've tried win, run, start etc etc etc and just keeps saying bad command or file name, any ideas?

    Win and hit Enter...

It may not even have windows on it...
To find out at the C prompt type in dir /p and hit Enter...spacebarr scrolls down 1 at a time...

How do you mean, "it's asking you"?

Is it asking you a question, such as "enter the location of command.com"? or
    does it look like this:

    Code: [Select]
    Microsoft(R) Windows 95
         (C)Copyright Microsoft Corp. 1981-1996.

    C:\>

In the latter case, in the worst case, the windows installation may be hooped. "win" should, as Patio noted, start windows. If it gives you "bad command or filename" (which loosely translates to "not found"), that means that either win.com is missing, or, the PATH is not properly set.

in the latter case, try "C:\Windows\win" (without the quotes) and see if that gets it started.

also give the dir command Patio noted a try, see what comes up.

WARNING. THE FOLLOWING IS TOO PEDANTIC FOR YOUNG VIEWERS.
To find out at the C prompt type in dir /p and hit Enter...spacebarr scrolls down 1 at a time...

/p goes per page, regardless of the key you press. I believe you may be thinking of trusty MORE, which added the ability to go through the piped text a single character at a time starting with either W2K or XP; however the "scroll a single line" key was enter, not space  ;D

No OS is installed.  Drive has been formatted & system files installed, i.e. format c: /s
Looks like hard drive is 1GB.

Do you know anything about the hardware?  Is it a "branded" computer (Dell, HP, Compaq)?
