Problems w/ installing various programs.
« on: August 04, 2005, 04:29:46 PM »
When trying to install certain programs/games such as C++, MSDN library, or even the original Half-Life(oddly HL2 installed without any problems),I keep getting the same error message. The error reads as follwed: config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close" to terminate the application.
I tried going into the properties for the programs and changing the compatabilty, but it did nothing. Any suggestionse?

Copy all the files to a temp directory and run the setup in compatability mode.

To fix run the following from the command prompt:

copy c:\windows\repair\config.nt c:\windows\system32

After you copy the file, find it in Windows Explorer, click properties and lock it down by giving it a read-only attribute.

This also works for autoexec.nt

Hope this helps.  8)

Merlin, I tried your DL but it didn't help...anything else I'm supposed to do once I installed it? I'll try sidewinder's advice and reply back if it works.

Waylon:

Please try to reproduce the error and leave a post with the exact error message.

A couple of Microsoft KB articles that might help:

I posted the exact error in my first post, but here it is again. "config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close" to terminate the application. "
