How much do we need to bow down to these sites that make us justify our websites?

http://www.mywot.com/

http://ratemysite.com/

I have recently had to swallow a bitter pill when my website was deemed 'ethical issues'.

All this happened because my privacy policy was deemed harsh...  in the fact I would 'reserve the right' to charge £10 in the event that somebody would request there details, which is well within my rights to do under UK law and the site is a UK domain. I would like to highlight the fact that it is 'reserve the right'
http://www.spaceandscience.co.uk/index.php/privacypolicymainmenuextras.html

I find these sites helpful but very frustrating when it comes to some 10yr old pushing a key to decide the fate of a website.

http://www.mywot.com/en/forum/7970-rate-my-site      if you would like to look at the thread.

It to me makes no sense. I feel these sites can be damaging to people who have no malicious intent.

Basically, what it boils down to is that Mulreay's Privacy Policy adheres to the U.K Data protection Act of 1998; apparently, the people on WOT are completely unaware of the scope of said act, and exactly how much work it could entail to get the information if somebody requests it; that is why there is a charge. It's not something simple like "oh, we store three cookies, here they are" It's pretty much an official document that has to be snail-mailed to them (I believe) and that incurs costs in both time as well as money, and they are all essentially saying he should offer it for free, because "he went to the trouble to collect said data". The thing is, even if he didn't collect any data, according to said law he's still have to try to find it and collect it into an official document to mail to anybody that requests the information through said act. Even then, he's not saying "I'll charge you"; he's saying he could charge for it, if it incurs any cost. and it's not storing anything sensitive; pretty much just usernames, passwords, and other stuff the user purposely provided to the site. Even so, collecting all the relevant data in the event that somebody requests it entails a lot of work, and suggesting he do that for free just because they don't feel that he should charge for his efforts in that regard is ridiculous, and shows a clear misunderstanding of said law.

Additionally, several posters remark "that would be illegal in Germany" or in whatever country they are. Of course, that's all wonderful, but it's entirely irrelevant; his site isn't in Germany, and therefore it adheres to the laws of the U.K, not Germany, or any other country.

However, because of the concerns around having a privacy policy, I made sure that mine had one. whew, thank goodness I've covered my bases.

BC I could not have EVER put it better than that.

As you know this has annoyed me no end...

Harry thanks for the advice, I'm two steps from walking but it means a lot to me that my site be treated with respect.

BC though knocked the nail on the head there.

My issue is with the power these 'people' have to destroy a sites reputation on a single click of the mouse.

Harry has a blog and that can be construed as a website but I feel it's a blog.

But in my opinion 'end' all web evaluator 10yr olds.

A blog is a website.

EDIT:

also, re "IPVOID", my site comes up the same, by the same "scanner" thing.

in fact, Microsoft.com's IP is "detected" as well, in addition to computerhope.com's IP. Although I wonder what the flip they are "detecting". It's dreadfully vague.

EDIT2: just tried checking mywot.com's IP as well. they are also "detected"... again, absolutely no idea what that means, but that guy is basing a number of arguments on mulreay's site being "detected" (or something) on there, and apparently half the web is "detected".

It would seem I had to apologise as the more I made my point the more they 'rated' my site down.

Just goes to show, we live in a virtual dictatorship rather than a democracy.

I think you can now see that it places your website at risk. And you want their statistics continue to receive from them, at the expense of your website. The problem is not on their server, but their own website s10.histats.com

The e-mail function on your website that you are also a problem as spam. You could work better with captcha security code.
Anyway, what we write will make no difference to you Seen from previous threads, there is no answer came back normal way.

Here you do with it, I quit seen that I've spent too much time to you

I'm two steps from walking but it means a lot to me that my site be treated with respect.
Hotlinking from other sites, regularly neglecting to include links to original source material, flinging personal insults against people and their nationality, acting like a defiant child (rather than having a rational discussion) when criticized...I have a hard time seeing why you or your site should deserve any respect.  Your space feed/aggregator site has some interesting articles when not posting arbitrary lists of numbers and it's great that you want to share it with others, but if you want respect, you have to give it as well.  The site shouldn't have been targeted for the data fee and I realize that working around a language barrier can be frustrating, but it's no excuse to act out in such an embarrassing and childish manner.  These folks already don't have an understanding of your local law; biting their heads off is only going to make it harder for them to understand what you are saying.  They don't seem to comprehend you anymore than you comprehend them, which is a good sign that you need to take it easy and try to articulate your point or seek out someone with whom you can communicate more effectively.  Heck, if you have to, send BC after them.
