Did I just brick my laptop?
    « on: October 16, 2010, 06:38:58 PM »
Ok, so my laptop got stolen. It was originally a vista machine and i had upograded to 7 home premium. I bought a tablet pc that came with xp. As soon as i got it i tested and everything was fine. I then decided to upgrade to 7 , which i still have the disk for. After upgrade, it tells me the copy of windows is not genuine and to go online to either register or buy a downloadable version. The problem is i cant get online now, it looks as if i have no drivers and i cant even find out what ethernet devices are in the tablet pc, no names......
    So my problems are:
    1. what do i do to be able to get network going to be able to connect to internet?
    2. what are my windows options after that?

what kind of internet are you connecting to? DSL, wireless or something else? If you have wireless internet, you'll probably want to set up your wireless card to receive the hot spot signal. If DSL, you'll probably want to set up the LAN/ethernet connection to the modem, unless you have a wireless option with it. Or if it's something else, we'll see.

Also curious, did you do something about your stolen laptop?

DLoad and re-install Win7 chipset and Ethernet controller drivers for the netbook....
As far as not being genuine that leads me to believe the laptop is still being used...
Contact MS and explain your story.

I see no driver DLoad page for that co.  which leads me to believe they don't actually make their products...just re-brand them.

You want the chipset; LAN and WLAN drivers....
            Chipset driver gets installed 1st

Curiously though they don't even mention what OS these are for.
Did this machine ship originally with a flavor of Linux as some netbooks do ? ?

no it had win xp...... can i still use them for win 7?
also i have already installed the lan and wlan drivers, should i delete them and install the chipset first?
and if yes how do i delete those drivers?

thanks again, really appreciate the time and help....need to get this thing up and running..

XP drivers may not work for Win7...
No need to remove the drivers...just re-install the chipset driver...then the other 2.

                Unfortunately ....no.
Netbook and Laptop drivers should always be direct from the manuf. site...

after i can finally get online i guess i can tackle the windows issue?
