    Best value external hard drive?
    « on: October 17, 2010, 07:16:17 PM »
My computer is infected and at capacity anyways so I want to reformat it, I plan to back up what I need on to an external drive beforehand.   There is an overwhelming amount of external HDs out there and not a lot of reviews and the few reviews that I find don't seem very reliable.  Can you guys recommend a good external HD?

    Things it must have...
    eSATA
    1TB
    Under $150

I did not see anywhere else to ask for recommendations, sorry if it's the wrong place.

To be honest, an external hard drive isn't going to help you until your system is clean. Most likely, whatever virus you think you have will get itself onto that external drive as well.

Nothing wrong with formatting, but why don't you let the malware guys here help you get your system clean before doing that?

As for an external drive, Toshiba, Seagate, Western Digital, and iomega all make good external drives (keep in mind they're external, not necessarily portable).

By the way, we don't seem to have answered your question. I'm a fan of Maxtor and Western Digital. I have a number of external drives and am pleased with all of them. I also have a "pocket" 500 Gb WD drive that's great. Because it gets its power from USB it's not as fast as my other "powered" drives, but it's super. Anyway at the $150 or less price point you'll find a large selection - just stay with the name brands.

      I'd also suggest considering Seagate...

my freecom external hard drive classic can be seen in add hardware wizard and on the taskbar usb notification but cannot be seen in my computer window

1TB externals are cheaper now. Still haven't gotten one yet ::)
