need help with updates!!!!

i cannot update my windows 7 has been like this for a while now but really want to update it so my hardware works correctly. the error is "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Yes i have gone into msconfig and set it to start and i have manually started it.... i found this text document in there not sure if it is of any help...

1) Never use msconfig to manage services. Go to START - RUN and type services.msc and manage your services from there.
2) Had you previously tweaked your services? Make sure Windows Update Service is set to "automatic" and reboot.
3) Any other issues with your system? Did update previously work? If so, what led up to this?

well actually i kinda typed that wrong i did go into services.msc to start the service and the dependences, also yes it is set to automatic the service runs but when i click "check for updates" it says that error no matter what, most of the other issue were that the system wouldn't boot sometimes but i think it was an ati driver.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? And tell us more about your system not booting. Please don't make us drag everything out of you.

well it would blue screen with a memory error and then it wouldn't boot up then fixed that with drivers and msi motherboard updates... but the updates stopped long before that i have had several viruses and i think its from not updating windows 7. also not sure if you have herd of remove WAT... this is a custom made machine with a 64 bit copy lost the key used remove WAT not sure if that had stopped the updates cause i shut them off a while ago so it would not try to activate it.

no i think the updates fix holes in the security? i know how to remove viruses and all of that i just wanted to know if anyone else has this error and knows how to fix it... ive researched it and it shows some people get it right from the manufacturer. i just dont understand why it says the service isnt running, when it is? could it be a fake error message?
