Author Topic: Can connect to home network, but not to internet (Read 14055 times)

Hi

I have two laptops, both are on the same network, one running Vista, one running Windows7. The one running vista is fine - it can connect to the network and the internet, the Windows 7 one can connect to my network but it keeps saying no internet access. This is using both broadband and wireless.

I have tried uninstalling the network drivers then restarting but that didn't work. I have trouble shooted it using windows and the message I get is: "windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings" I tried going into IE8 and changing the auto detect settings in Tools, Internet Options, Connections, but again nothing worked.

Is anyone able to help me please?

Firstly, check if wired connection will work.

Also....

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Go Start>Run ("Start search" in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

At Command Prompt, paste this:
ipconfig /all>c:\ipconfig_all.txt&notepad c:\ipconfig_all.txt&exit

Nice to see you again.

I have tried both wireless and wired connection - only connects to home network and not to the net.

For the results of your instructions please see the word file attached. The second one didn't work. I copied both to the laptop in question via flash drive.

Also a bit of extra info if it will help - I have been using a mobile broadband stick http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-broadband/about-mobilebroadband.jsp?gclid=CKjRh_7q96UCFYE3pAodu1aaow which allows wi fi connection where ever you are. It requires software to be loaded on the laptop. I'm not sure if this has had an impact? I haven't tried uninstalling because it's a bit of a pain to install it.

Yeah, definitely something wrong there....

Do you have any errors in Device Manager?
Did you try to reinstall wireless/wired network adapters drivers?

If so, try some basic steps....

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

Restart computer.

Didn't work. Ok at this point it's late at night and this laptop is approaching deathrow. I haven't tried the other stuff yet. I am uninstalling the Vodem software just to rule it out.

To top all this off the computer just keeps 'blacking out' Just dies and then sometimes restarts, or stays off until I power it up again. It then comes up with a 'Start windows in safe mode' screen. Any ideas what causes that - or is that an entire new thread on its own?

Thanks for the help so far Broni. If this thing keeps on having trouble I'm taking it back to the shop. (Hmm just restarted and it did another die thing.)

Hi Broni - haven't had a chance to doing any further tests today. The laptop screen keeps blacking out about 30 seconds after windows loads so I can't do anything. It doesn't seem to shutdown or restart like I thought - the screen just goes black. Moving the mouse or pressing keyboard buttons won't bring it back either. I'm thinking a graphics card problem so am uninstalling the driver and reinstalling one downloaded from the internet to see if it fixes it.

I'm thinking a graphics card problem so am uninstalling the driver and reinstalling one downloaded from the internet to see if it fixes it.

What is the make & model number of this laptop?

Broni: I reinstalled the video drivers and it seems to have worked. - Will test with another screen if it fails again.

Computer_Commando: It is a Acer Aspire 5740G bought back in Feb this year. The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470.

I am commencing further internet tests that Broni mentioned. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network drivers while I was doing the display driver - still no luck yet.

Right - the laptop just blacked out again so I restarted and attached an LCD screen to it. 30 secs after loading up windows both screens blacked out and then a few moments later I got a BSOD on both screens. Restarting in normal mode. Not good - same timing and got another BSOD. Trying without the LCD plugged in. Restarted, screen balcked out again but didn't get a BSOD. LCD must have been causing it.

My analysis is that this laptop is very unstable - perhaps a full format and reload of windows would be the best fix considering the amount of time I have been spending on it?

Also I managed to try the commands below - still no internet access. (The laptop got unstable after doing this command and me uninstalling a program - seems anytime any changes are made it has a wobbly)

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

You may have video chip failing.
How old is your laptop?

Try to get a can of compressed air and clean well all vents.

I agree, it's still under warranty. Contact Acer immediately.

Hi Broni

The laptop is only 10 months old. I have given up on it - going to take it in on warranty claim as Computer Commando says. I think my time is better spent over Christmas installing my new hard disks on my gaming machine in raid mirrored. (I've never done a raid before so it'll be a new experience.)
